01Pixel 9 charging speeds
Get a 30W or higher USB-C charger with PPS and you'll charge a Pixel 9 at close to its 27W maximum. Paying extra for a 45W charger only makes sense if you also own a Pixel 9 Pro XL or a laptop that can use it.
Google's "55% in 30 minutes" claim was measured with its 45W charger, which made many people think they needed one. In GSMArena's testing, the Pixel 9 hit 55% in 30 minutes on a 45W charger and 52% on Google's older 30W charger. Three percent isn't worth a new brick.
| Method | Pixel 9 max | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | 27W | 30W+ USB-C PD charger with PPS |
| Pixel Stand (2nd gen) | 15W | Google's own stand |
| Qi-certified wireless pad | 12W | Any Qi pad rated 12W or more |
| Battery Share (out) | Supported | Earbuds or a watch on the phone's back |
02Pixel 9 vs the rest of the Pixel 9 family
If your household has more than one Pixel 9 model, buy for the fastest one. Every model is happy on a bigger PPS charger, since the phone decides how much power to draw.
| Model | Wired max | Pixel Stand 2 | Qi pad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 9 | 27W | 15W | 12W |
| Pixel 9 Pro | 27W | 21W | 12W |
| Pixel 9 Pro XL | 37W | 23W | 12W |
| Pixel 9 Pro Fold | 21W | Qi speeds only | 12W |
30W PPS charger
- Within a few percent of max speed
- Smaller and cheaper
- Works with older Pixels too
45W+ PPS charger
- Full speed on every Pixel 9 model
- Can run small laptops and tablets
- No faster for the regular Pixel 9
03Estimate your Pixel 9 charge time
Set the charger slider to what you have. Under 18W or so, the difference from the phone's 27W limit really shows. Above 27W, nothing changes. The 4,700 mAh battery sits between the two Android presets; the 5,000 mAh option gives a slightly conservative estimate.
It usually means the charger lacks USB PD or PPS, or the cable is USB-A. Older 5W and 10W cubes from other phones are the common culprits. The slow charging guide covers the rest.
04Wireless charging and adding magnets
The Pixel 9 charges at up to 12W on Qi-certified pads and 15W on Google's Pixel Stand (2nd gen). It isn't Qi2 certified and has no magnets, so magnetic chargers won't hold it on their own. That changed with the Pixel 10, which added built-in magnets; see the Pixel 10 Pro charger guide for comparison.
A magnetic case gives the Pixel 9 a magnet ring, so MagSafe-compatible chargers, car mounts and grips stay put. Don't expect extra speed from it: the phone charges at standard Qi rates on a magnetic pad, but it stays centered on the coil, which is half the battle with flat pads. If your Pixel keeps stopping on a pad, read Pixel wireless charging not working.
Cases that add a magnet ring, plus a magnetic pad that stays aligned overnight.
05Charging in the car and from a power bank
The PPS rule applies here too. A car charger or power bank with a USB-C PD port will charge the Pixel 9 at a decent rate, and one that also lists PPS gets closer to the 27W ceiling. Cheap car chargers with only USB-A ports will feel slow, especially with navigation running and the screen on.
- Power bank: a 10,000 mAh bank refills the 4,700 mAh Pixel 9 a bit under twice. A 20,000 mAh bank covers a weekend.
- Car: a USB-C PD car charger plus a short cable, or a magnetic mount with a magnetic case if you want it on the vent.
- Laptop: a laptop's USB-C port charges the Pixel, but usually slowly. Good for a desk top-up, not a rescue.
Heat is the speed killer on the road. A phone on a sunny dashboard running maps will throttle charging no matter what you plug in. Point a vent at it or keep it out of direct sun. More in phone overheating in a car mount.
06Cables and what's in the box
Google hasn't included a charger with Pixels for years, and the Pixel 9 ships with a USB-C to USB-C cable only. That cable handles 27W fine. For a second cable, stick with USB-C on both ends; a USB-A cable can't carry USB PD, so it caps your speed. Our charging cable guide explains ratings.
USB-C chargers with spare wattage and cables that won't bottleneck them. Check PPS on the charger's listing.
Questions people ask
Does the Pixel 9 need a 45W charger?
No. The Pixel 9 maxes out at 27W, so a 30W USB-C PPS charger gets you almost the same speed. In GSMArena's test, 30W reached 52% in 30 minutes versus 55% on a 45W charger.
What wattage is the Pixel 9 charger?
There isn't one in the box. The phone itself supports up to 27W wired, 15W on the Pixel Stand (2nd gen) and 12W on Qi-certified wireless chargers.
Does the Pixel 9 support Qi2 or MagSafe?
No. The Pixel 9 isn't Qi2 certified and has no magnets. It charges on Qi2 and MagSafe-compatible pads as a standard Qi phone, and a magnetic case lets those chargers hold it in place.
Can I use my old Pixel 30W charger with a Pixel 9?
Yes. Google's 30W USB-C charger supports PPS and charges the Pixel 9 close to its top speed. It's the sensible choice unless you need more power for another device.
Can the Pixel 9 charge other devices wirelessly?
Yes, with Battery Share. Turn it on, then place Qi earbuds or a compatible watch on the phone's back. It's slow and drains your phone, so use it as a top-up, not a main charger.
