01What to try first
If you're wondering why your phone is charging slow, the answer is usually the charger or the cable, not the phone. Fast charging only happens when the brick, the cable and the phone all agree on a higher power level, and any one of them can drag it down.
If every box is ticked and it's still slow, jump to the 10-minute test below. It tells you which part to replace so you don't buy three things to fix one problem.
02The charger sets the ceiling
Watts are the speed limit. Your phone decides how much to pull, but it can never pull more than the charger offers. That's why a phone that fast-charges at home crawls on a hotel nightstand or in a car.
| What you're plugged into | Typical output | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Old USB-A cube that came with older phones | 5W | Barely keeps up while you use the phone |
| Laptop or TV USB-A port | Around 2.5W to 7.5W | Very slow; fine for overnight at best |
| Basic car USB port | Often 5W to 12W | Loses charge with maps running |
| 20W USB-C PD charger | 20W | Fast charging for iPhone |
| 25W USB-C PD charger with PPS | 25W | Fast charging for many Galaxy and Pixel phones |
| 45W+ USB-C PD charger with PPS | 45W+ | Top speed on phones that support it |
Two terms are worth knowing. USB Power Delivery (PD) is the fast-charging standard iPhones and most Androids use. PPS is an add-on to PD that Samsung and Google phones use for their fastest modes. A charger with both covers nearly everything. More in what is USB Power Delivery. An iPhone that shows a "Slow Charger" message is telling you exactly this; see what that alert means.
Plug a laptop into the same brick and your phone's share of the power can drop sharply. Charge the phone alone, or use a charger with enough total wattage for both.
03The 10-minute slow-charge test
Change one thing at a time and watch the battery percentage over 10 minutes. Keep the screen off and the phone out of its case.
-
Note the starting percentage
Start somewhere between 20% and 50%. Phones charge fastest at low levels and slow down on purpose near full, so a test at 85% tells you nothing.
-
Charge 10 minutes with your usual setup
Most phones on a proper fast charger gain somewhere around 10% to 20% in 10 minutes from a low level. A gain of 3% or 4% points to a problem.
-
Swap only the cable
Use a known-good USB-C cable, ideally one rated for 60W or more. If the gain jumps, the old cable was the bottleneck. Cables wear out inside long before they look damaged.
-
Swap only the charger
Back to the original cable, but a different, higher-watt USB-C PD charger. If the gain jumps now, replace the brick.
-
Clean the port
Power the phone off and gently lift lint out with a wooden toothpick or a soft brush. Never metal, never liquid. Step-by-step in how to clean a USB-C port or, for Lightning, cleaning an iPhone port.
-
Restart and retest
If nothing changed the result, restart the phone and run it once more. Still slow with a new cable, a strong charger and a clean port? Check battery health next.
04Wireless and car charging are slower by design
A basic Qi pad charges iPhones at 7.5W and many Androids at a similar trickle, even if the box says 15W. Magnetic Qi2 and MagSafe chargers do better on phones with magnets, but a good cable still beats them. If you mostly top up during the day, wired is the faster habit. Compare the two in wireless vs wired charging.
In the car, the USB port built into the dash is often the problem. A dedicated car charger with USB-C PD output usually fixes it. See car charger not working if yours is giving trouble.
05When slow charging is deliberate
Modern phones slow themselves down to protect the battery, and that's a good thing. Three common reasons:
- Above about 80%, every phone tapers the speed. The last 20% always takes longer than the first.
- Overnight charging features such as Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone, Adaptive charging on Pixel and Battery protection on Galaxy hold at 80% and finish before you wake.
- Heat. A warm battery charges slower or pauses. Using the phone heavily while it charges makes this worse.
Batteries also slow down with age. If your phone is a few years old and charges slowly whatever you plug in, check its battery health: iPhone or Samsung.

Questions people ask
Why is my phone charging slow all of a sudden?
Something in the chain changed: a different charger or cable, lint building up in the port, or the phone running hot. Try a known-good wall charger and cable, clean the port, and make sure no apps are running hard while it charges.
Can a bad cable make a phone charge slowly?
Yes, often. Worn cables develop resistance inside, and basic cables may not support fast-charging power. Swapping to a USB-C cable rated for 60W or more is a cheap way to rule it out.
Is it bad if my phone charges slowly?
No. Slow charging is gentle on the battery. It's only a problem when it can't keep up with your day. Overnight, a slow charger is perfectly fine.
Why does my phone charge slowly after 80%?
Every phone tapers charging near full to protect the battery, and many hold at 80% overnight on purpose. Check Optimized, Adaptive or Battery protection settings if it stops at 80% completely.
What charger do I need for fast charging?
A USB-C charger with Power Delivery. 20W or more covers iPhone fast charging. Samsung and Pixel fast modes need PD with PPS at 25W or more, and some models go higher with a 45W charger.
