01Find your grip in three questions
Magnetic snap grip
It clicks on the back, holds firmly in your hand, and pulls off in a second when you set the phone on a charger. The Luxi Snap Grip is the one we'd start with.
Shop magnetic gripsFinger ring holder
A ring locks around your finger, so the phone can't slip out even if your grip relaxes. Most fold flat and double as a kickstand.
Shop ring gripsFinger strap
Slide your fingers under the strap and the phone sits in your palm, freeing your thumb to reach the whole screen and shutter.
Shop straps and gripsAdhesive pop-out socket
The slimmest option when collapsed and the cheapest. Stick it on your case, not the phone, so you can move it later.
Shop gripsThere are five common types of phone grips, and they differ in three ways that actually matter day to day: how they attach, how securely they hold, and whether they get in the way of charging. The table below puts them side by side.
02The five types of phone grips compared
| Type | How it attaches | Hold | Stand? | Wireless charging | Pocket bulk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic snap grip | Magnets (MagSafe-compatible or Qi2) | Good | Many models | Remove it, then charge | Low to medium |
| Finger ring | Adhesive or magnetic | Best | Yes, usually | Adhesive: blocked. Magnetic: remove it | Medium |
| Pop-out socket | Adhesive, some magnetic | Good | Landscape only | Adhesive: blocked | Low when collapsed |
| Finger strap or loop | Adhesive, magnetic or built into a case | Very good | Some | Depends on how it's attached | Low |
| Grip or kickstand case | Is the case | Fair | Kickstand cases, yes | Usually fine | Built in |
If a built-in stand matters more to you than the grip, our kickstand case vs phone grip comparison goes deeper. And if you're deciding between a ring and a magnetic grip specifically, see phone ring holder vs MagSafe grip.
03Magnetic or adhesive?
This is the bigger decision. The grip shape is a matter of taste; the attachment decides whether it fits around your charger, your car mount and your case.
Magnetic
- Pull it off to charge or mount the phone
- Swap between grip, wallet and stand
- Can be knocked off by a hard sideways bump
Adhesive
- Won't get knocked off
- Usually cheaper and slimmer
- Blocks wireless charging and magnetic mounts
No magnets in your phone? You can still go magnetic by adding a magnetic case or a ring sticker. Our guide to attaching a magnetic ring sticker shows how to center it so wireless charging still works.
04Where to put a grip on the back
Magnetic grips go where the magnets put them, roughly the center of the back. With adhesive grips you choose, and the spot changes how the phone feels.
- Slightly above center is the usual sweet spot for texting. Your thumb reaches the top of the screen without the phone tipping backward.
- Lower down balances heavy Pro Max and Ultra phones better if you mostly scroll.
- Clear of the camera bump so the grip doesn't rock or block the lenses when it's expanded.
- On the case, not the phone. You can replace a case. Adhesive on a glass back is a pain to remove.
Before you peel an adhesive grip, hold it in place with a small loop of tape and use the phone for a few minutes. Move it until texting and taking photos both feel natural, then commit.
05Grips we'd actually buy
Our hero is the Luxi Snap Grip, a MagSafe-compatible snap grip for people who want a secure hold without giving up wireless charging. If you'd like a grip that folds out into a stand, a foldable magnetic ring is the pick. And for creators who shoot a lot of one-handed video, a finger strap feels the most natural.
All of these attach magnetically, so they come off when you charge.

Questions people ask
What is the most secure type of phone grip?
A finger ring. It goes around your finger, so the phone stays put even if your hand relaxes. Straps come close. Sockets and magnetic grips rely on you pinching them, which is fine for most use but less secure on a crowded train.
Can you wirelessly charge with a phone grip on?
Not with the grip in place. An adhesive grip blocks the charger for good. A magnetic grip snaps off in a second, so you remove it, charge, and put it back.
Do magnetic phone grips fall off?
They hold firmly in normal use but can be knocked off by a hard sideways bump, especially through a thick non-magnetic case. A MagSafe-compatible case keeps them much steadier.
Are phone grips good for small hands?
Yes, that's where they help most. A grip or strap lets you hold a large phone with your fingers and keep your thumb free, so you can reach more of the screen without shifting your hand.
Do phone grips work on Samsung phones?
Adhesive grips work on any phone or case. Magnetic grips need a magnetic case on Galaxy phones, because Samsung doesn't build magnets into them.
