How to use a MagSafe wallet without losing it

A snap-on wallet takes five seconds to attach and a few habits to keep. Here's how to load it, prop the phone up with it, and stop it peeling off in your pocket.

01Attach it in the right spot

Learning how to use a MagSafe wallet takes about a minute: hold it near the center of your phone's back and the magnets pull it into place. iPhone 12 and later have the magnet ring built in, so the wallet finds the right spot by itself.

On other phones you need something for it to grab. Galaxy phones have no magnets built in, so you'll want a magnetic case. Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL and 10 Pro Fold have Qi2 magnets, while the Pixel 10a doesn't. Older phones can use an adhesive ring; see how to attach a magnetic ring sticker.

  1. Clean the back

Wipe the phone or case with a dry cloth. Grit between the wallet and the case scratches both and costs you grip.

  2. Point the open edge where you want it

Most wallets have one open side for cards. Face it toward the top of the phone if you pull cards up with your thumb, or to the side if you slide them out.

  3. Let it snap

Hold the wallet close to the center and let go. If it lands off-center, lift it off and try again rather than sliding it, which wears the surface.

  4. Check it's square

The edges should sit parallel to the phone's sides and clear of the camera bump. A wallet that hits the camera bump never sits flat and comes off more easily.

Your case decides how strong it feels

A thick, non-magnetic case puts distance between the wallet and the phone's magnets, and the hold drops a lot. A case with its own magnet ring, like those in our MagSafe Thin Magnetic line, keeps it firm.

02Loading cards: what goes in and what stays home

Most snap-on wallets hold two or three cards. The number on the listing is the real limit. Every extra card pushes the wallet a little farther from the magnets and makes it easier to knock off.

Card Wallet-friendly? Why
Chip debit or credit card Yes The chip and contactless antenna aren't affected by the wallet's magnets
Driver's license or ID Yes Usually no magnetic data you rely on day to day
Hotel key card Keep it elsewhere Many still use a magnetic stripe that's easy to scramble
Car key fob or building badge Keep it elsewhere Bulky, and Apple warns against putting fobs and badges near a MagSafe charger
Cash One folded bill at most Thick folds lift the wallet off the magnets
The magnet risk is mostly to magnetic stripes. More detail in our guide to whether MagSafe wallets demagnetize credit cards.

Put the card you use most on the outside, closest to the thumb hole or open edge. To get it out, press up through the hole with your thumb, or push the card toward the open side. Pulling the whole wallet off the phone to fish out a card is how wallets get dropped. Full rundown on the stripe question: do MagSafe wallets demagnetize credit cards?

03Using the stand flap

Wallets with a fold-out flap double as a kickstand. Leave the wallet on the phone, fold the flap back, and set the phone down on its edge.

  • Landscape is the stable one. Use it for videos, recipes and FaceTime on a table.
  • Portrait works on many wallets but tips more easily on soft or sloped surfaces. Keep it on a flat desk.
  • Angle: open the flap further for a more upright view, less for typing at a low angle.
  • Don't use it as a grip. A stand flap isn't designed to take your hand's weight. If you want something to hook a finger through, a dedicated grip like the Luxi Snap Grip from our MagSafe grips is the better tool.

For longer video calls on a stand, our phone stand for video calls guide covers height and lighting.

04Charging, paying and pockets

Take it off to charge wirelessly

Apple advises against putting credit cards, key fobs or badges between an iPhone and a MagSafe charger. Cards also block the charger from seating properly. Pop the wallet off, charge, snap it back on. A cable charge is fine with the wallet attached.

Tap-to-pay keeps working. Apple Pay and Google Wallet use the phone's NFC antenna near the top of the phone, and a slim wallet on the back doesn't stop it. If you tap a physical card from the wallet instead, hold the wallet itself to the reader; having two contactless cards stacked can confuse some terminals, so slide one out if a payment fails.

Pockets are where wallets go missing. Magnets hold hard against a straight pull and weakly against a sideways shove, so a tight jeans pocket can scrape the wallet off as the phone slides in. Put the phone in with the wallet facing your leg, and it rides along. If yours still drops off often, work through why a MagSafe wallet keeps falling off.

Habits that keep the wallet on the phone

05Find My wallets vs regular snap-on wallets

Apple's own MagSafe wallets add a Find My feature: when the wallet detaches, Find My can show where your iPhone was when they separated. Most other magnetic wallets, ours included, are plain card holders with no tracking.

Find My wallet

Best for people who've lost one before
  • Shows where it came off
  • iPhone only
  • Costs several times more
Our pick

Regular magnetic wallet

Best for most everyday carry
  • Works with any magnetic phone or case
  • Often adds a stand flap or finger strap
  • No tracking, so pocket habits matter

Our take: if you're careful about pockets, a regular wallet does the job for much less. If you keep cash and your main card in it and you've lost wallets before, the tracking is worth paying for. Still weighing a snap-on wallet against a folio? See wallet case vs MagSafe wallet.

Questions people ask

How do you get cards out of a MagSafe wallet?

Push the front card up through the thumb hole on the back, or slide it toward the wallet's open edge. Leave the wallet on the phone while you do it. Pulling the wallet off every time wears the surface and is how most get dropped.

Can I charge my phone with a MagSafe wallet on?

Not wirelessly. Apple advises against having cards between the iPhone and a MagSafe charger, and the wallet stops the charger from seating. Take it off first. Charging with a cable is fine with the wallet attached.

Does a MagSafe wallet work with a case?

Yes, if the case is magnetic or very thin. A thick case without its own magnet ring weakens the hold a lot, so the wallet slides off easily. A MagSafe-compatible case is the reliable choice.

Will Apple Pay work with a wallet on the back?

Yes. Apple Pay uses the NFC antenna near the top of the iPhone, and a slim card wallet on the back doesn't block it. Hold the top of the phone near the reader as usual.

Can I use a MagSafe wallet on a Samsung phone?

Only with a magnetic case or an adhesive ring. Galaxy phones have no magnets built in, so the wallet has nothing to hold on to without one.
