01Why your MagSafe grip is not sticking
Magnetic grips only hold when there's a ring of magnets on the other side to grab. If your grip won't stick, something is missing from that pair or something is sitting between them.
Magnet strength drops off fast with distance. A millimeter or two of plain silicone, a card in a pocket, or a sticker placed off-center can turn a firm snap into a lazy slide. Match your symptom below, then work through the fixes in order.
| What happens | Likely cause | Try this first |
|---|---|---|
| Barely attaches at all | Case has no magnets, or phone has none (16e, most Android) | Test on the bare phone, then switch to a magnetic case |
| Holds, but slides down when you hold it | Thick or non-magnetic case, or a slippery finish | Use a slim magnetic case |
| Spins or sits crooked | Grip is off the magnet ring, or ring sticker is off-center | Re-seat it on the center of the ring |
| Pops off when you open the grip | You're pulling sideways, or the grip's magnets are weak | Grip near the base, not the tip |
| Used to stick, now weaker | Lint, dust or oil on the contact faces | Wipe both faces with a dry microfiber cloth |
| Ring sticker came off with the grip | Adhesive hadn't cured, or the surface was dirty | Clean, re-stick a fresh ring, wait overnight |
02Fix it in order
-
Try the bare phone
Take the case off and snap the grip straight onto the back of an iPhone 12 or later. If it holds firmly, the grip is fine and the case is the problem. If it doesn't hold on a bare iPhone, skip to step 7.
-
Check for a magnet ring in the case
Hold the grip near the case on its own. A magnetic case pulls the grip in and centers it. A regular case just lets it rest there. A plain case adds distance, so the phone's magnets can't reach the grip properly.
-
Wipe both contact faces
Pocket lint and skin oil build up on the grip's base and the case. Use a dry microfiber cloth, or one slightly damp with water, and let both dry before you try again.
-
Center it on the ring
Grips hold best when their magnets sit right over the ring, not half on, half off. Slide it until you feel it click into place. On iPhone the ring sits roughly in the middle of the back, below the camera bump.
-
Hold it the right way
Magnets resist being pulled straight off far better than being pushed sideways. Hold the grip near its base, and avoid hanging the full weight of a Pro Max off the tip of an extended grip.
-
Remove anything in between
Cards in a back pocket, a metal plate from an old car mount, or a decorative sticker all add a gap. Strip the back down to case only.
-
Blame the grip last
If it won't hold on a bare iPhone 12 or later, or on a known-good magnetic case, the grip's own magnets are too weak. Cheap no-name grips are the usual culprit. Swap it for one designed for MagSafe-compatible magnets.
Stacking a second magnet ring or an extra metal plate on top of a magnetic case can confuse alignment and block wireless charging. One ring, in the right spot, beats two.
03Does your phone have magnets at all?
This catches a lot of people. MagSafe-compatible grips don't stick to every phone, because most phones have no magnets inside. Find yours below.
| Phone | Magnets built in? | To use a magnetic grip |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12 to 15, iPhone 16, 16 Pro | Yes | Bare phone or a magnetic case |
| iPhone 17, 17 Pro, Air, 17e, 18 Pro | Yes | Bare phone or a magnetic case |
| iPhone 11 and earlier, iPhone 16e | No | Magnetic case or ring sticker |
| Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 11 series | Yes (Pixelsnap) | Bare phone or a magnetic case |
| Pixel 10a, Pixel 9 and earlier | No | Magnetic case or ring sticker |
| Galaxy S24, S25, S26 series | No | Magnetic case (S25 and S26 are Qi2 Ready) |
| Most other Android phones | No | Magnetic case or ring sticker |
If your phone is in the "No" rows, the grip isn't faulty. It just has nothing to grab. For details on specific brands, see does Samsung have MagSafe and does the Pixel 10 have MagSafe, or the full iPhone list in which iPhones have MagSafe.
04Ring sticker on Android or an older iPhone
A metal ring sticker gives a grip something to hold on any phone, but it's the part most likely to fail. Grips usually pull the sticker off, not the other way round, and nearly always because of placement or cure time.
If a sticker keeps peeling, a magnetic case is the sturdier fix: the magnets are molded in, so there's no adhesive to give up. We compare both in MagSafe case vs ring sticker.
05When it's time for a better grip or case
Two upgrades cover almost every case of a weak hold: a slim magnetic case that puts a ring right where the grip lands, and a grip built for MagSafe-compatible magnets rather than a generic adhesive design. Big phones like a Pro Max or Ultra benefit most, since there's more weight hanging off the magnets.
A magnetic grip, a slim magnetic case, and a ring sticker for phones without magnets.

Questions people ask
Why won't my MagSafe grip stick to my case?
Most likely the case has no magnets. A regular case adds distance between the grip and the phone's magnet ring, so the hold gets weak or disappears. Switch to a case with a built-in magnet ring, or test on the bare phone to confirm.
Do MagSafe grips work on Android?
Only if there are magnets to grab. Pixel 10 models (not the 10a) and the Pixel 11 series have them built in. Galaxy phones and most other Android phones need a magnetic case or a metal ring sticker first.
Does a MagSafe grip work on the iPhone 16e?
Not on the bare phone. The iPhone 16e has no MagSafe magnets. Use a magnetic case made for the 16e, or a ring sticker, and the grip will attach to that.
How do I make my magnetic grip stronger?
Remove anything between grip and phone, use a slim magnetic case, clean both contact faces and center the grip on the ring. Hold it near the base so you're not pulling sideways. If it's still weak on a bare iPhone, the grip's magnets are the problem.
Can a magnetic grip fall off in my pocket?
A well-matched grip on a magnetic case rarely does, but tight pockets can lever it off. If yours keeps detaching, check the case first. A case without magnets is the usual reason grips slip off when you sit down.
