01MagSafe case vs magnetic ring sticker, side by side
A MagSafe-compatible case is the stronger, neater option. A magnetic ring sticker is the cheaper, more flexible one. If a magnetic case is made for your phone, it's usually worth the extra few dollars.
| Magnetic case | Ring sticker | |
|---|---|---|
| Alignment | Automatic, molded over the coil | As good as your placement |
| Hold strength | Strongest, magnets meet magnets | Good, but a thin steel ring grips less |
| Durability | Lasts the life of the case | Adhesive can lift at the edges |
| Wireless charging | Designed for it | Fine if centered and ring-shaped |
| Phones supported | Only models with a magnetic case | Almost any flat-backed phone or case |
| Keeps your current case | No, it replaces it | Yes, sticks onto it |
| Cost | Price of a case | A few dollars |
02Why the case usually holds tighter
A magnetic case has its own ring of magnets. When a grip or charger meets it, magnet pulls on magnet, and the case's ring also helps center the accessory. A steel ring sticker is passive: the accessory's magnets pull on it, but it doesn't pull back, and a thin strip of steel can only carry so much magnetic force.
In daily use that means a grip on a magnetic case feels like it clicks into place, while on a sticker it's more of a firm rest. It's enough for a wallet or a desk stand. It's where heavy phones on bumpy car mounts start to slip. If you drive with a magnetic mount, read magnetic car mount not holding the phone first.
These iPhones already have magnets. A plain case just puts distance between them and your accessories. A magnetic case closes that gap; a sticker on the outside of a plain case does, too, but less neatly. Swapping to a magnetic case is the cleaner fix.
What your current case is made of matters
If you're weighing a sticker because you want to keep your case, check the material first. Hard polycarbonate and smooth TPU take adhesive well. Soft-touch silicone, fabric and textured leather don't, and stickers on them tend to lift within weeks. Very thick rugged cases are the other problem: a sticker on the outside will hold an accessory, but a magnetic charger may struggle to charge through that much case. In those situations, a magnetic version of a similar case is the better spend.
03Which one for your phone
Magnetic case
- Perfect alignment for Qi2 and MagSafe-compatible chargers
- Nothing to peel
- Protection included
Ring sticker
- Fits phones with no magnetic case on sale
- Keeps your favorite case
- Cheap to try
- iPhone 12 to 18 Pro (except 16e): magnetic case. The phone's own magnets do half the work.
- iPhone 16e or iPhone 11 and older: a magnetic case made for your model if you can find one, otherwise a sticker.
- Galaxy S25 and S26: magnetic case. These are Qi2 Ready, so the case also gives chargers proper alignment. See does Samsung have MagSafe.
- Pixel 10 (not 10a) and Pixel 11: magnets are built in; a magnetic case keeps the hold strong through the case.
- Everything else: sticker, unless a magnetic case exists. Our MagSafe for Android guide lists the brands.
04Putting a ring sticker on so it lasts
-
Find the coil
Use the alignment guide that comes with the sticker if it has one. Otherwise, set the phone on a wireless pad and slide it until charging starts. Mark that center lightly on the case.
-
Clean the spot
Wipe with an alcohol wipe and let it dry fully. Oil and dust are why most stickers peel.
-
Stick it on a hard surface
Hard plastic or the phone's back works best. Soft silicone and textured leather don't hold adhesive well.
-
Press it down
Press firmly all the way around for about 30 seconds, paying attention to the edges.
-
Wait before you load it
Leave it overnight before you hang a grip or wallet on it. Adhesive gets stronger as it cures.
Inside the case or outside? Outside keeps the accessory's magnets closest to the ring, for the strongest hold. Inside, between phone and case, hides it, but adds the case thickness to the gap. Step-by-step photos live in how to attach a magnetic ring sticker.

Questions people ask
Is a magnetic ring sticker as strong as a MagSafe case?
Usually not. A magnetic case has magnets that pull on the accessory's magnets and center it. Most stickers are thin steel rings, which hold well enough for grips and wallets but give a lighter grip, especially on car mounts.
Does a magnetic ring sticker work with MagSafe chargers?
It holds the charger in place, and a ring-shaped sticker centered on the coil leaves charging working. Charging speed still depends on your phone. A sticker doesn't add Qi2 or MagSafe charging speeds to a phone that lacks them.
Should the ring sticker go inside or outside the case?
Outside gives the strongest hold because the accessory touches the ring directly. Inside hides it but adds the case's thickness to the gap. On a thick case, outside is the better choice.
Can I use a ring sticker on an iPhone with MagSafe?
You can, but there's little reason to. A magnetic case does the same job more neatly. A sticker only makes sense if you're keeping a plain case you really like.
Will a ring sticker damage my phone?
It won't hurt the phone's internals. Removing it can leave adhesive residue; peel slowly and clean the spot with isopropyl alcohol. Putting it on the case instead of the phone avoids that.
