01Which iPhone do I have? Check Settings first
To see which iPhone you have, open Settings > General > About and read the Model Name line. It spells out the exact model, so there's no decoding involved.
-
Open Settings
Tap the gray gear icon on your Home Screen, or swipe down and search "Settings".
-
Go to General > About
Tap General, then About at the top of the list.
-
Read Model Name
This shows the marketing name, such as "iPhone 15" or "iPhone 17 Pro Max". That's the name to use when you shop for a case or screen protector.
-
Tap Model Number for the A-number
The Model Number line first shows a part number (it usually starts with M). Tap it once and it switches to the A-number, a short code like A3081. That code pins down the exact model and region.
Save the Model Name in your Notes app. Next time you're shopping, you won't need to dig through Settings, and you won't mix up a Pro with a Pro Max.
02Phone won't turn on? Other ways to check
If the screen is broken or the battery is flat, you still have options:
- The original box. The label on the back lists the model name and part number.
- Another Apple device. On an iPad or Mac signed into the same Apple Account, open your account in Settings or System Settings and scroll to the device list. Tap the iPhone to see its model.
- The SIM tray slot. On models with a SIM tray, Apple prints the model number inside the slot. US models from the iPhone 14 onward are eSIM-only and have no tray.
- Your carrier account or receipt. The order or device page usually shows the exact model.
03Identify your iPhone by how it looks
Look at three things: how many cameras there are and how they're arranged, the charging port, and the buttons on the sides. That narrows it to one or two models, and screen size settles the rest.
When you count cameras, count only the big lenses. Pro models also have a flash and a small LiDAR Scanner dot near the lenses, and standard models have a flash and a microphone hole. Those aren't cameras, and miscounting them is how a 16 gets mistaken for a Pro.
| Model (year) | Screen | Rear cameras | Other clues | US A-number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max (2026) | 6.3 / 6.9 in | Three, in a full-width plateau | Smaller Dynamic Island than the 17 Pro | A3472 / A3473 |
| iPhone 17e (2026) | 6.1 in | One | Has MagSafe, unlike the 16e | A3575 |
| iPhone 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max (2025) | 6.3 / 6.9 in | Three, in a full-width plateau | Aluminum unibody | A3256 / A3257 |
| iPhone Air (2025) | 6.5 in | One, in a bar across the top | Very thin, titanium band | A3260 |
| iPhone 17 (2025) | 6.3 in | Two, stacked vertically | Camera Control, Action button | A3258 |
| iPhone 16e (2025) | 6.1 in | One | No MagSafe magnets | A3212 |
| iPhone 16 / 16 Plus (2024) | 6.1 / 6.7 in | Two, stacked vertically | Camera Control, Action button | A3081 / A3082 |
| iPhone 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max (2024) | 6.3 / 6.9 in | Three, square block | Titanium band, Camera Control | A3083 / A3084 |
| iPhone 15 / 15 Plus (2023) | 6.1 / 6.7 in | Two, diagonal | USB-C, Ring/Silent switch | A2846 / A2847 |
| iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max (2023) | 6.1 / 6.7 in | Three, square block | Titanium band, Action button | A2848 / A2849 |
| iPhone 13 (2021) | 6.1 in | Two, diagonal | Lightning port, notch | A2482 |
The pairs people mix up most
- iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17. Same camera layout and buttons. The 17 has a bigger 6.3-inch screen and is 2 mm taller, so their cases aren't interchangeable. More in will an iPhone 16 case fit the 17.
- iPhone 15 vs iPhone 16. Identical size. Diagonal cameras and a Ring/Silent switch mean 15; vertical cameras and a Camera Control button on the right mean 16.
- iPhone 17 Pro vs 18 Pro. Very similar from the back. Settings is the reliable way to tell them apart.
- Pro vs Pro Max. Same design, different size. If you're unsure, measure: Pro Max models are about 76 to 78 mm wide, Pro models about 70 to 72 mm.
04Why the exact model matters when you buy a case
Apple changes the body, camera or buttons almost every year, so cases rarely carry over between generations, and never between a Pro and a Pro Max. Ordering an "iPhone 16" case for a 16 Pro is an easy mistake, and a 10-second check in Settings avoids it.
Our iPhone case compatibility chart lists the few models that do share cases. Even easier: set your phone once in Find My Phone, and the store shows only the cases, grips and screen protectors that fit it.
Choose your model from the options on each listing.
Questions people ask
How do I find my iPhone model number?
Go to Settings > General > About. The Model Number line shows a part number first; tap it once to see the A-number, such as A3081. You can also find it on the original box, or in the SIM tray slot on models that have one.
What's the difference between the part number and the A-number?
The part number (usually starting with M) identifies the exact configuration, including color and storage. The A-number identifies the hardware model and region. For buying a case, the Model Name is all you need.
How can I tell if my iPhone is a Pro?
Count the rear cameras. Every recent Pro and Pro Max has three. Standard models have two, and the Air and the e models have one. Settings > General > About confirms it.
How do I check which iPhone I have without turning it on?
Check the box label, your carrier account, or the device list in your Apple Account on another Apple device. You can also use the visual clues: camera layout, charging port and side buttons.
Does my iPhone have MagSafe?
Every iPhone 12 and newer has MagSafe magnets except the iPhone 16e and the iPhone SE models. See our full list of iPhones with MagSafe.
