01Will an iPhone 16 case fit iPhone 17? The numbers say no
An iPhone 16 case will not fit an iPhone 17 the way it should. Apple made the base iPhone 17 two millimeters taller to fit a 6.3-inch display, and a case built around the 147.6 mm iPhone 16 simply runs out of room.
Two millimeters sounds like nothing. On a phone case it's a lot. Cases are molded to within a fraction of a millimeter at the corners, because that's where they grip. Stretch a 16 case over a 17 and one of two things happens: a soft case pulls tight and lifts at the corners, or a hard case refuses to snap on at all.

02Check any pairing in this lineup
Pick the phone you own and the model the case was made for. We've included the phones people most often mix up with the iPhone 17, including the iPhone 16 Pro, which has an identical height and width.
03Why two phones that look the same need different cases
From the back, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are easy to confuse: two cameras stacked in a vertical pill, an Action button, a Camera Control on the right side and a USB-C port. The differences that matter to a case are all about size and position.
The screen got bigger, so the body did too
The iPhone 17 jumped from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, the same screen size as the 16 Pro. Apple trimmed the borders, but most of the extra glass needed extra length. That's where the 2 mm comes from, and it pushes every opening on the frame down by a small amount.
Camera Control lands in a different spot
Camera Control is a pressure- and touch-sensitive button, so a case needs either an open cutout or a properly designed cover over it. On a 16 case fitted to a 17, the cutout won't sit centered on the control. You'll be pressing the edge of the case instead of the button. Our Camera Control case guide covers what good cutouts look like.
The camera module is larger
The 17's dual 48MP camera system sits in a bigger raised module. An older case can sit right on the lens ring rather than around it, which is how lens glass picks up scratches and why a case can rock when the phone lies flat.
Pressing a rigid iPhone 16 case onto an iPhone 17 puts pressure on the corners of the screen. If it doesn't close with light thumb pressure, stop. A cracked screen costs far more than a new case.
04What does carry over from the iPhone 16
Not everything goes in the drawer. Plenty of your iPhone 16 accessories work fine on a 17:
- MagSafe-compatible chargers, wallets and grips. Both phones have magnets built in, so anything that snaps to the back still snaps. See which iPhones have MagSafe if you're unsure about older gear.
- USB-C cables and chargers. Same port. If you want the fastest wired speed, our iPhone 17 charger guide has the details.
- Car mounts and stands, as long as the clamp opens wide enough for a phone 2 mm taller.
What doesn't carry over: cases, screen protectors (6.1 vs 6.3 inches) and camera lens protectors, which are cut for each module's exact shape.
05Picking an iPhone 17 case
Look for the exact words "iPhone 17" on the listing. Many cases are sold in a range of sizes under one product, so choose your model in the options before you add it to cart. If a listing only says "iPhone 16/17", ask which size you'll get.

Questions people ask
Is the iPhone 17 bigger than the iPhone 16?
Yes. The iPhone 17 is 149.6 mm tall versus 147.6 mm, and 7.95 mm thick versus 7.80 mm. The width is almost identical (71.5 vs 71.6 mm). The screen grew from 6.1 to 6.3 inches.
Will an iPhone 16 Pro case fit the iPhone 17?
Not properly. The two phones share a 149.6 x 71.5 mm footprint, but the 16 Pro is thicker and its case is cut for a three-lens camera block. The 17 may go in, but it'll sit loose and the openings won't line up.
Do iPhone 16 screen protectors fit the iPhone 17?
No. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch one. A 16 protector will leave a gap around the edges and the cutout won't match. Buy one sized for the 17.
Can I use my MagSafe accessories from the iPhone 16 on the iPhone 17?
Yes. Both phones have built-in magnets, so MagSafe-compatible chargers, wallets and grips attach the same way. Just use a case with magnets, or the case will weaken the hold.
Will an iPhone 17 case fit an iPhone 16?
It will go on, but it's 2 mm too long. The phone will shift inside it, and the button and camera openings won't sit where they should. It's not worth the risk in a drop.
