Every September somebody writes in asking whether last year's case will fit this year's iPhone. It almost never does, and the reasons are tiny: 2 millimeters of height, a camera that moved from diagonal to vertical, one new button on the side. So we pulled Apple's own measurements for every iPhone from the 11 to the 18 Pro Max and checked the pairs people actually ask about.

Short answer

An iPhone case compatibility chart comes down to one rule: buy a case made for your exact model. Only three pairs are true twins: iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd gen, and iPhone 16e and 17e. iPhone 17 Pro cases go on the 18 Pro, though Apple says they aren't officially compatible, and iPhone 13 cases squeeze onto a 14.

An iPhone 16 case does not fit the iPhone 17. A 15 case doesn't fit the 16, and a 14 case doesn't fit the 15.

iPhone case compatibility chart: every model from iPhone 11 to 18 Pro Max

Every measurement below comes from Apple's tech-spec page for that model, in millimeters. Depth is the body only; Apple leaves the camera bump out, which is why a phone listed at 8.75 mm can have a plateau around 11.4 mm thick. Think of it as an iPhone case size chart with the column most charts skip: which other iPhone, if any, can wear the same case.

Will my old case fit my new iPhone? Check any two models

Pick the phone your case was made for and the phone you have now. The checker compares Apple's dimensions, camera layout, edge shape and side buttons, then applies the fit reports we could verify. When a verdict rests on Apple's numbers alone, it says so.

Will an old iPhone case fit a new iPhone? The six pairs people ask about

These are the combinations people search for most, newest first. Each verdict rests on Apple's numbers plus at least one hands-on or press report, listed in the sources.

Do iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro?

Fits with caveats Most do, but Apple says they aren't officially compatible.

On paper the phones are identical: Apple lists the 18 Pro at 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and the 18 Pro Max at 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm, the same as the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. The difference is the camera plateau. Apple told John Gruber of Daring Fireball it's slightly thicker this year; MacRumors put it at 11.5 mm against 11.4 mm, while Macworld reported closer to half a millimeter. Gruber's own 17 Pro cases fit the 18 Pro perfectly.

The catch is protection, not fit. Native Union told Macworld that with a 17 Pro case on an 18 Pro, the lenses can end up almost touching the surface the phone lies on. If your old case has a generous raised edge around the plateau, keep using it. If it was already close to flush, a case made for the 18 Pro is cheap insurance on a phone that starts at $1,199. The reverse, an 18 Pro case on a 17 Pro, is fine.

Will an iPhone 16 case fit the iPhone 17?

Doesn't fit The iPhone 17 is 2 mm taller.

The iPhone 16 measures 147.6 × 71.6 × 7.80 mm. The iPhone 17 measures 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm: 2.0 mm taller, 0.1 mm narrower and 0.15 mm thicker, because the screen grew from 6.1 to 6.3 inches. A fitted case can't absorb 2 mm of height, and 9to5Mac's verdict after launch was the same. The Pro models are further apart still: the 17 Pro and Pro Max traded the square camera bump for a full-width plateau and grew in every direction.

One odd detail: the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 17 share the exact same 149.6 × 71.5 mm outline. A 16 Pro case is still built for a phone 0.3 mm thicker, with a three-lens opening where the 17 has a two-lens pill, so it would sit loose. We found no reliable report of that swap working. (New 17 on the way? Here's what charger the iPhone 17 uses, since none comes in the box.)

Will an iPhone 15 case fit the iPhone 16?

Doesn't fit Same body size, but the camera and buttons moved.

This is the pair that fools people. Apple lists both phones at 147.6 × 71.6 × 7.80 mm, and both Plus models at 160.9 × 77.8 × 7.80 mm, so a 15 case slides on. Then it goes wrong. The two rear cameras moved from a diagonal layout to a vertical pill, so the opening no longer lines up. The Ring/Silent switch became an Action button. And the iPhone 16 added Camera Control on the right side, which a 15 case covers completely. Pro owners have it worse: the 16 Pro is 3 mm taller than the 15 Pro, because its screen grew to 6.3 inches.

Will an iPhone 14 case fit the iPhone 15?

Doesn't fit Close numbers, different shape.

The iPhone 15 is 0.9 mm taller than the 14 (147.6 vs 146.7 mm), and it introduced contoured edges that curve into the back where the 14 has flat sides. 9to5Mac called it a no for the whole lineup. The 15 Pro changed most: it's shorter and narrower than the 14 Pro (146.6 × 70.6 mm vs 147.5 × 71.5 mm) but 0.4 mm thicker, and it swapped the switch for the Action button. The Plus models come closest, within 0.3 mm in every direction, but the rounded edges apply to them too.

Will an iPhone 13 case fit the iPhone 14?

Fits with caveats It goes on, but it isn't a clean fit.

This is the closest cross-generation match in the chart. Both phones are 146.7 × 71.5 mm. The iPhone 14 is 0.15 mm thicker (7.80 vs 7.65 mm), its camera bump is slightly larger and the side buttons shifted a little. Plenty of budget cases are sold as "iPhone 13/14" for this reason, and a flexible case forgives the difference better than a rigid shell. 9to5Mac and iMore still recommended a case made for the 14. The Pro and Pro Max are a different story: the 14 Pro is taller with a much bigger camera, and the 14 Plus is a size of its own.

Do iPhone 16e cases fit the iPhone 17e?

Fits Same body, same camera, same buttons.

Apple lists both phones at 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.80 mm with a single rear camera, an Action button and no Camera Control, and AppleInsider confirmed at launch that 16e cases fit the 17e. The 17e is 2 grams heavier, which no case will notice. The difference that matters is inside. The 17e has MagSafe, at up to 15W, and the 16e doesn't, so most 16e cases were made without magnets. The phone will still charge through a thin one, but a magnetic wallet or grip won't hold well. If you plan to use those, buy a 17e case with a magnet ring.

iPhone dimensions comparison: any two models, drawn to scale

A number like 0.15 mm is hard to picture. Pick two iPhones and this draws their backs on top of each other at true proportions from Apple's height and width, then lists every difference a case cares about.

Size overlay

Compare two iPhones to scale

Both backs are drawn to one scale and lined up at the bottom-left corner; the circle zooms in 5× on the top corner. Corner radius and camera shapes are simplified. The numbers are Apple's.

Why a fraction of a millimeter decides the fit

A case is molded around one phone. Its inside dimensions, openings and button covers come from that model's drawings, so screen size and model name don't matter to it. Six details decide whether a different iPhone can wear it.

What a case has to match

Back view and side view of a recent iPhone. From the back, the Action button and volume keys sit on the right edge and Camera Control on the left.

The six things an iPhone case must match Back and side view of an iPhone with six numbered markers that match the list below. BACKSIDE 1 2 3 4 5 6
  1. OutlineHeight and width. Too big and the phone won't seat; too small and it slides around.
  2. DepthA thicker phone strains the lip that wraps over the screen. A thinner one rattles.
  3. Camera openingIt must clear the bump and keep a raised edge around the lenses. A new layout won't line up.
  4. Action button or switchA switch needs an open slot. Apple replaced it with the Action button on the 15 Pro, and on every model since.
  5. Camera ControlOn the iPhone 16, 17, Air and 18 Pro lines, but not the 16e or 17e. A case needs an opening or a cover built for it.
  6. Edge profileFlat sides on the iPhone 12, 13 and 14. The iPhone 15 introduced contoured edges that curve into the back.
What people assume

Same screen size, same case.

What the specs say

Twelve iPhones since 2019 have a 6.1-inch screen, spread over seven body sizes. The 16 Pro and the 17 are both 6.3 inches with an identical outline, and they still don't share a case.

iPhone case sizes: the only models that share a case

Out of 33 models, very few pairs share anything. Here's the complete list, sorted by how much we'd trust the swap.

Old cases, new phones and MagSafe

Fit isn't only about plastic. Every iPhone in the chart from the 12 on has MagSafe except the SE (3rd gen) and the iPhone 16e, and that changes what an old case can do on a new phone. Our model-by-model MagSafe list has the details and charging speeds.

  • A case made for a phone without MagSafe usually has no magnets. A 16e case on a 17e charges through fine, but magnetic accessories lose most of their grip. What a MagSafe case is explains why the case's own ring matters.
  • A magnetic case places its ring for the model it was made for. Reusing one on a near-twin? Snap a MagSafe charger on and check that it lands centered and holds when you lift the phone.
  • A case can't add MagSafe charging to a phone that lacks it. A magnetic case on a 16e will hold a wallet, but the phone still charges at 7.5W Qi speed. (Qi2 chargers use the same magnets; see Qi2 vs MagSafe.)

How to check a case listing before you buy

  1. Match the exact model name. "iPhone 17 Pro" and "iPhone 17" are different cases. Screen size, "fits 2025 iPhones" and "universal 6.3-inch" are not model names.
  2. Compare the camera opening with your phone. The 17 Pro and 18 Pro have a full-width plateau, the 17 and 16 a vertical pill, the 15 and 14 a square with diagonal lenses. A product photo with the wrong camera shape is the fastest giveaway.
  3. On a 16, 17, Air or 18 Pro, look for Camera Control. The right side should show an opening or a dedicated cover. A plain wall there means the case was made for an older phone.
  4. Check for a raised edge around the camera. It keeps the lenses off the table, and it's the part to inspect on an 18 Pro wearing a 17 Pro case.
  5. If you want MagSafe accessories, look for magnets, not "compatible." "Magnetic," "built-in magnets" or a magnet count are commitments. "MagSafe compatible" often just means a charger can charge through it.

GripLux cases: iPhone 14, 15 and 16 only

We sell cases, so here's our bias up front, and the limit that comes with it. Every GripLux iPhone case is made for the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 families: the 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, and the same four sizes for the 15 and 16. We don't make cases for the iPhone 17, Air, 17e or 18 Pro yet. The 16e isn't covered either; it shares the 14's body, but our camera and side cutouts weren't made for it. Better you read that here than at checkout.

If you ran the checker with a 14, 15 or 16 as your phone, the card below already has your size selected.

iPhone case compatibility FAQ

Are iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 cases the same?

No. The iPhone 17 measures 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm against the iPhone 16's 147.6 × 71.6 × 7.80 mm, so it's 2 mm taller and slightly thicker, with a 6.3-inch screen instead of 6.1. The Pro models changed even more, moving from a square camera bump to a full-width plateau. Buy a case labeled for your exact model.

Can I use an iPhone 17 case on an iPhone 17 Pro?

No. The 17 Pro is 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, bigger than the iPhone 17 in every direction and 0.8 mm thicker, and its three cameras sit in a full-width plateau instead of the 17's vertical pill. Both have 6.3-inch screens, which is why people assume they match.

Do iPhone 12 cases fit the iPhone 13?

No. The outlines match at 146.7 × 71.5 mm, but the iPhone 13 is 0.25 mm thicker (7.65 vs 7.4 mm) and its two cameras sit diagonally, where the 12's are stacked vertically, so the camera opening won't line up. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro do share cases with each other.

Will an iPhone 14 case fit the iPhone 16e?

It goes on, since Apple lists both at 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.80 mm, but it isn't made for it. The camera opening is cut for two lenses instead of one, and the side slot was shaped for the 14's switch rather than the Action button. The same goes for the 17e.

Does the iPhone Air share a case size with any other iPhone?

No. At 156.2 × 74.7 × 5.64 mm it's more than 1.6 mm thinner than any other model in our chart and a size of its own, with a full-width camera bar across the top. Only cases made for the Air fit it.

Are there cases for the iPhone 18 yet?

For the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, yes. Apple announced its own cases alongside the phones, which went on sale September 18, 2026. There's no standard iPhone 18 yet. MacRumors reports it's expected in spring 2027, so any "iPhone 18" case listed today is built from leaks, not from a real phone.

Do Plus and Pro Max cases fit each other?

No. They share a screen size, not a body. The iPhone 16 Plus is 160.9 × 77.8 × 7.80 mm and the 16 Pro Max is 163.0 × 77.6 × 8.25 mm, with a different camera and 0.45 mm more depth. The 14 and 15 generations work the same way.

What size case does the iPhone SE (3rd generation) use?

The same one as the SE (2nd generation). Apple lists both at 138.4 × 67.3 × 7.3 mm, with one rear camera, a Home button and the Ring/Silent switch in the same places, so their cases are interchangeable. Neither has MagSafe, so their cases only need magnets if you use magnetic accessories.
