01Check these settings before you touch the hardware
When Samsung wireless charging is not working properly, the phone is often doing exactly what a setting told it to. Two menus cause most of the confusion: the fast wireless charging switch, and Battery protection.
Menu names shift slightly between One UI versions, so if a path doesn't match exactly, search for the setting name from the top of the Settings app.
-
Turn on Fast wireless charging
Go to Settings > Battery > Charging settings and switch on Fast wireless charging. With it off, the phone still charges on a pad, just slowly, which looks like a fault if you're used to the faster speed.
-
Look at Battery protection
Under Settings > Battery > Battery protection, the Maximum option stops charging at 80% every time. Adaptive holds at 80% overnight and finishes just before you usually wake. Basic charges to 100%, then lets it drop a little before topping up. None of these is a fault.
-
Unplug the USB cable
A Galaxy won't charge wirelessly while a cable is connected to its USB-C port, including a cable plugged into a car for Android Auto.
-
Turn off Wireless PowerShare
If Wireless PowerShare is on (in Quick settings), your phone is set up to give power, not take it. Switch it off and place the phone back on the pad.
-
Restart and update
Hold the side key and volume down, tap Restart, then check Settings > Software update. A restart clears the odd stuck charging state, and updates sometimes change charging behavior.
That's Adaptive or Maximum Battery protection working as designed, not a broken pad. If you need 100% today, switch Battery protection to Basic for the night.
02What speed should your Galaxy get?
A lot of "not working" complaints are really "slower than I expected". Samsung's wireless speeds vary by model and need a compatible pad and adapter to reach them. The Galaxy S26 range is the first to split three ways.
| Model | Max wireless speed | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 | 15W (Qi2) | Qi2 charger; magnetic case to snap on |
| Galaxy S26+ | 20W Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 | Charger that supports Samsung's 20W mode |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 25W Super Fast Wireless Charging | Charger that supports 25W, plus its adapter |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip8 | 15W | Fast wireless pad and adapter |
| Most Galaxy S20 to S25 models | Roughly 10W to 15W | Check your model's spec page |
| Any Galaxy on a basic Qi pad | Often 5W to 7.5W | Works, but slowly |
If your phone has a wired "Super fast charging" mode, don't expect wireless to match it. Even the S26 Ultra's 25W wireless is well below its wired speed. For wired problems, see Samsung fast charging not working.
03Cases, magnets and the Qi2 catch
Galaxy S phones don't have magnets built in, including the S26 series. That matters because magnetic Qi2 chargers rely on magnets to pull the phone onto the coil. Set a bare Galaxy on a magnetic puck and it will slide off, charge in bursts, or not start at all.
+Cases that charge fine
- Slim TPU, silicone or leather cases
- Cases with a magnet ring built in, for Qi2 chargers
- Grips mounted low, away from the coil
- A magnetic ring sticker placed on a case, centered
–Cases that cause trouble
- Thick rugged cases with an air gap behind the coil
- Metal plates for magnetic car mounts
- Wallet cases with cards stacked over the back
- Pop-out grips or rings glued to the center
Want magnetic charging on a Galaxy? A case with a built-in ring is the cleanest route, like the magnetic cases we carry for recent S models. More background in does Samsung have MagSafe.
A steel plate stuck inside a case for a car mount blocks the field and can get hot on a pad. Remove it before charging, or switch to a magnetic case that charges through.
04Heat warnings and charging that keeps stopping
Wireless charging makes more heat than a cable, and Galaxy phones slow or pause charging to protect the battery when it gets warm. You may see a notification that charging has stopped because the battery is too hot or too cold.
- Charge on a hard surface, not a bed, couch or sunny dashboard.
- Take off thick cases while the phone charges.
- Close games and video streaming while it's on the pad.
- If notifications keep buzzing the phone off-center, turn on Do Not Disturb or use a stand.
If the phone is uncomfortably hot rather than warm, stop charging and let it cool. Our phone overheating while charging guide explains which temperatures are normal and when to stop.
05Phone or pad? Find out in five minutes
If the phone fails on every pad but charges fine by cable, the wireless coil or the phone's software is at fault, and Samsung service is the next step. If the pad fails with every device, replace it. A pad that blinks instead of charging has its own guide: wireless charger blinking.
A stand keeps the coil lined up, and a magnetic case makes Qi2 chargers usable.
Questions people ask
Why did my Samsung stop charging wirelessly?
Check that Fast wireless charging is on, that no USB cable is connected, and that Wireless PowerShare is off. Then remove the case and center the phone. A warm battery also pauses charging until it cools.
Where is the fast wireless charging setting on Samsung?
Go to Settings > Battery > Charging settings and switch on Fast wireless charging. If you can't find it, search "wireless" in the Settings app, since menu names vary slightly by One UI version.
Why does my Galaxy stop wireless charging at 80%?
Battery protection is the usual reason. Maximum stops at 80% every time, and Adaptive holds at 80% overnight. Change it under Settings > Battery > Battery protection if you need a full charge.
Does the Galaxy S26 have magnets for Qi2?
No. The S26 series supports Qi2 charging but has no magnets built in, so you need a case or ring accessory with magnets to snap onto magnetic chargers.
Can I use an iPhone MagSafe charger on a Samsung?
It can charge a Galaxy, but slowly, and it won't hold on without a magnetic case. A Qi2 charger is the better match for a Galaxy with a magnetic case.
