01Phone charging time calculator
A phone on a 20W or faster USB-C charger usually gets to half full in 20 to 30 minutes, then needs another hour or so to finish. The calculator above shows why: the first half goes in at close to full speed, and the top end trickles in on purpose.
Two numbers decide your first-half speed: what the charger can supply and what the phone will accept. The phone always takes the lower of the two. That's why the slider for your phone's max wired speed matters. Plug a phone that tops out at 27W into a 65W brick and it still charges at 27W.
02Typical times by phone and charger
These are the makers' own fast-charge claims where they publish one. Full-charge times are rarely quoted officially, so treat anything past 50% as an estimate.
| Phone | Charger | Maker's claim | Rough time to 100% |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 | 20W USB-C PD | Up to 50% in about 30 min | About 1.5 to 2 h |
| iPhone 17 | 40W+ USB-C PD | Up to 50% in about 20 min | About 1.5 h |
| iPhone Air | 20W+ USB-C PD | Up to 50% in about 30 min | About 1.5 to 2 h |
| iPhone 18 Pro | 60W-capable USB-C PD | 50% in around 15 min | About 1.25 to 1.5 h |
| Pixel 10 Pro | 30W USB-C PD with PPS | Up to 55% in about 30 min | About 1.5 h |
| Any phone | Old 5W USB-A cube | None published | 3 h or more |
| Any phone | Basic 7.5W Qi pad | None published | About 3 to 4 h |

03Why the last 20% takes so long
Lithium-ion batteries charge in two phases. Your phone manages both, and no charger can skip the second one.
- Bulk phase, roughly 0 to 70 or 80%. The phone pulls as much current as it and the charger allow. This is where a bigger charger earns its keep.
- Top-off phase, roughly 80 to 100%. Voltage is held steady and current tapers off so the cells don't get stressed. The final 10% can take as long as the first 40%.
Then there's software. iPhones with Optimized Battery Charging can pause at 80% overnight and finish just before your alarm, and some phones let you cap charging at 80% permanently. If yours seems stuck, read why an iPhone stops at 80% before blaming the charger.
Plug in right away and leave the phone alone. Twenty minutes in the bulk phase on a fast charger often adds 30 to 50 percentage points. Waiting for 100% is the slow part.
04Cable vs wireless: the time gap
Wireless charging loses more energy as heat, and phones slow down when they warm up. Switch the calculator to Magnetic 15W or Basic pad and you'll see the time to 50% roughly double compared with a fast cable.
+Wireless makes sense when
- The phone charges overnight and speed doesn't matter
- You top up in short bursts at a desk
- You want to grab the phone without unplugging
–Use a cable when
- You need a big top-up in under an hour
- The phone is already warm from gaming or navigation
- You're using a thick case that weakens the connection
Newer magnetic standards close the gap. Some iPhones charge at up to 25W on the right magnetic charger, which is quicker than an old 5W cable. Our MagSafe charging speeds post has the details by model.
05Get a faster charge from the gear you own
-
Use a USB-C Power Delivery charger
20W is the floor for fast charging on iPhone. Galaxy and Pixel phones want PD with PPS for their top speed.
-
Check the cable
A frayed or no-name USB-A cable can cap you at a few watts. A USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W or more removes the doubt.
-
Take the phone out of a hot spot
Heat makes phones throttle charging. A sunny dashboard or a pillow can double your time.
-
Lock the screen
Gaming or video calls while charging can eat most of the incoming power.
-
Clean the port
Lint stops the plug seating fully. A wooden toothpick and a gentle hand fix it.
Still slow after all that? Work through why your phone is charging slowly to find the weak link.
USB-C chargers and a high-watt cable. Match the charger to your phone's top wired speed.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to fully charge a phone?
On a 20W or faster USB-C charger, most current phones go from empty to full in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Half of that is the slow final stretch past 80%. On an old 5W cube or a basic wireless pad, expect three hours or more.
Why does my phone charge fast to 80% then slow down?
That's the battery's top-off phase. The phone cuts the current as the cells fill to limit stress and heat. Features like Optimized Battery Charging can also pause at 80% and finish later.
Does a higher-watt charger charge my phone faster?
Only up to your phone's own limit. A phone that accepts 25W charges at 25W on a 25W, 65W or 100W charger. Beyond that, extra watts give you headroom for other devices, not speed.
Is it bad to charge my phone to 100% every time?
It's fine for most people. Phones manage the top end carefully. If you keep a phone for years, a cap at 80% or your phone's optimized charging setting can slow battery wear a little.
How long does wireless charging take?
Roughly 2 to 3 hours on a 15W magnetic charger and 3 to 4 on a basic 7.5W pad, depending on battery size and heat. Newer 25W magnetic chargers are faster on phones that support them.
