A clear case looks great for about two months. Then the corners go gray, the sides pick up a tan tint, and you start wondering whether it's dirt or something worse. Usually it's a bit of both, and only one of them comes off in the sink.
To clean a clear phone case, take it off the phone, scrub it with warm water and a few drops of dish soap using a soft toothbrush, work a baking soda paste into stubborn corners, rinse, then wipe it with 70% isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. That removes oils, grime and most light stains.
It won't remove true yellowing. Yellowing is a chemical change inside the plastic caused by UV light and oxygen, so no soap, paste or soak can undo it. The 30-second test below tells you which one you're dealing with.
How to clean a clear phone case in 5 minutes
This is the routine for a clear TPU case (the soft, bendy kind almost every clear case is made of) or a clear hard-shell hybrid. You need dish soap, a soft toothbrush, baking soda, a microfiber cloth and a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a few drops on the cloth.
- Take the case off the phone. Never clean a case while it's on the phone. Water and alcohol wick into the ports and the gap around the camera.
- Rinse it under warm tap water. Warm, not hot. Hot water softens TPU and can warp the lip that holds the phone.
- Scrub with dish soap and a soft toothbrush. Two or three drops of ordinary dish soap is plenty. Dish soap exists to lift grease, and most of what makes a clear case look dingy is skin oil holding onto dust. Work the bristles into the corners, the button covers and the camera cutout.
- Use baking soda paste on the stubborn spots. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water, rub it into the gray corners with the toothbrush or your fingertip for a minute, then rinse. It's a gentle abrasive, so go light on glossy hard-shell backs.
- Rinse, then wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol strips the last film of oil and disinfects. Apple lists 70% isopropyl wipes as safe for hard, nonporous surfaces.
- Let it dry completely. Give it 30 minutes, or until there is no moisture in the corners. Trapped water under a case leaves spots on the phone and smells over time.
Apple's instructions are more cautious than most blogs: wipe the case inside and out with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, and don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners with hydrogen peroxide. The method above stays inside those lines except for the baking soda, which is a mild abrasive. Skip it on a case with a glossy printed or coated back.
Method picker: your case, your problem
Not every case should be cleaned the same way, and not every mark is dirt. Pick what your case is made of and what's wrong with it.
How should I clean my case?
Recommendations follow the manufacturer guidance we could find (Apple's in particular) plus basic polymer chemistry. When in doubt, test on the inside of the case first.
Why do clear cases turn yellow?
Most clear cases are thermoplastic polyurethane, or TPU. It's cheap, flexible, grips well and absorbs drops, which is why it's everywhere. The common grades use aromatic building blocks, and aromatic polyurethanes are known to yellow under light. Ultraviolet light breaks bonds in the polymer, oxygen reacts with the broken ends, and some of the new structures absorb blue light. Take blue out of white light and what's left looks yellow.
Two details matter for cleaning:
- The color forms inside the material, not on it. That's why scrubbing does nothing to real yellowing.
- Heat speeds it up. Dashboards, sunny windowsills and hot pockets all accelerate the same reactions. Sweat, skin oils and sunscreen add a separate surface tint on top.
Hard polycarbonate backs yellow too, but more slowly and mostly in a thin surface layer, which is why hybrid cases (hard clear back, soft TPU sides) often end up with clear backs and yellow edges. Silicone doesn't photo-yellow the same way; when a silicone case changes color, it's usually oils and dye soaking in.
Stain vs yellowing: where the color lives
A stain sits on the surface and cleaning can reach it. Yellowing is spread through the plastic itself.

Can this case be saved?
Answer from what you can see. The alcohol test is the tie-breaker.
What removes yellowing from a clear case, and what doesn't
Search for yellow case fixes and you'll find a dozen kitchen remedies. Here's what each one can realistically do, given that the grime is on the surface and the yellow is in the plastic.
| Method | Grime and oils | True yellowing | Risk to the case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dish soap and warm water | Yes | No | None |
| Baking soda paste | Yes, stubborn spots | No | Light scuffing on glossy backs |
| 70% isopropyl alcohol | Yes, and disinfects | No | Low; can dull some printed coatings |
| White vinegar | Mineral spots only | No | Low |
| Toothpaste or magic eraser | Yes, by sanding | No | Hazes clear plastic permanently |
| Hydrogen peroxide in sunlight | Some | Temporary, inconsistent | Apple says avoid; UV does more damage |
| Bleach | Some | No | Can embrittle and cloud TPU |
| Dishwasher | Yes | No | Heat can warp the fit |
The hydrogen peroxide trick comes from restoring yellowed ABS computer plastics. Results on phone-case TPU are hit and miss, it can't rebuild the damaged polymer, and Apple specifically lists hydrogen peroxide as something to keep off its cases.
So the honest answer to "how do I make my clear case clear again" is this: clean it properly and you'll get back everything that was dirt. If what's left is an even tan through the whole case, the case has reached the end of its clear life. It still protects your phone exactly as well as before; it just doesn't look new.
How to clean other case materials
Silicone cases
Silicone is a lint magnet and soaks up oils. Wipe it with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth, per Apple. For heavier grime, a drop of dish soap on the cloth, then a clean damp wipe and a full air dry. A strip of tape pulls lint out of the matte finish better than any cloth.
Frosted and matte thin cases
Frosted shells hide fingerprints because the surface is textured, and that texture is also where grime sits. Soap, water and a soft toothbrush, then a microfiber dry. Skip abrasives, which polish frosted spots shiny. Our frosted vs solid comparison covers how each finish ages.
Leather cases
Apple suggests a clean cloth with warm water and mild hand soap, and warns that cleaning and leather conditioners can change the color. Don't soak leather and don't use alcohol on it.
Aramid ("Kevlar") cases
Aramid shells are nonporous and easy: a damp microfiber cloth, a drop of soap if needed, dry it off. We wrote a full Kevlar case care guide, and our aramid fiber case guide explains why the material doesn't yellow like TPU.
Fabric and woven cases
Apple's method for its woven cases: a teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent in a cup of water, rub gently with a dampened cloth for about a minute, rinse with a fresh damp cloth, and let it dry fully.
Do all clear cases turn yellow? How to slow it down
Nearly all clear TPU cases yellow eventually. "Anti-yellowing" cases use UV absorbers and stabilizers that slow the reaction, and they do help, but the additives get used up over time. Treat the claim as "yellows later," not "never yellows."
- Keep it out of the sun and heat. A phone left on a dashboard or poolside ages its case faster than a year of pocket use.
- Wash off sunscreen and lotion the same day. They stain, and some ingredients react with the plastic.
- Clean it every few weeks. Oil left on the surface makes discoloration look worse and builds up in the corners.
- Consider a hard clear back if you want clear for longer. Polycarbonate holds clarity better than all-TPU cases.
- Or pick a finish that doesn't show it. Tinted and solid colors don't reveal a slight tint the way crystal-clear plastic does.
Or skip the clear-case cycle
We don't sell clear TPU cases, partly for the reasons above. Our Ultra Thin cases use a frosted or solid finish that hides fingerprints and doesn't advertise every bit of wear. They fit the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 families.

Clear case cleaning FAQ
How do I make my clear phone case clear again?
Wash it with warm water and dish soap using a soft toothbrush, use a baking soda paste on stubborn corners, rinse, and wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol. That restores whatever was dirt. If an even yellow tint remains through the whole case, that's UV damage inside the plastic and it can't be reversed.
How can I deep clean a clear phone case?
Remove it from the phone, soak it for ten minutes in warm soapy water, scrub every edge and cutout with a soft toothbrush, treat gray corners with baking soda paste, rinse well, disinfect with 70% isopropyl alcohol, and let it dry completely before putting it back on.
Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
Most clear cases are TPU. UV light and oxygen break down the polymer and create compounds that absorb blue light, so the plastic looks yellow. Heat speeds it up, and skin oils and sunscreen add a surface tint on top. Anti-yellowing additives slow the process but don't stop it.
Does baking soda remove yellowing from a phone case?
No. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that lifts surface grime, which can make a case look noticeably cleaner. It can't reach color that formed inside the plastic. Use it gently, since it can scuff glossy hard-shell backs.
Can you use hydrogen peroxide or bleach on a clear case?
We don't recommend either. Apple's cleaning guidance says to keep hydrogen peroxide and bleach off its cases. Peroxide-in-sunlight tricks give inconsistent, often temporary results on TPU, and bleach can cloud or embrittle the plastic.
Can you put a phone case in the dishwasher?
It's a bad idea. Dishwasher heat can soften TPU enough to loosen the fit around the phone, and heat accelerates yellowing. Hand-washing with warm water and dish soap takes five minutes and does the same job.
Do all clear cases turn yellow?
Nearly all clear TPU cases do eventually. Cases with a hard polycarbonate back and UV-stabilized materials stay clear noticeably longer, and keeping the case out of sun and heat helps most. Tinted, frosted and solid-color cases hide the change.
How often should I clean my phone case?
A quick alcohol wipe weekly and a full wash every few weeks keeps oil from building up in the corners. Clean it right away after sunscreen, makeup or a day at the beach.
