01Which Samsung phone do I have? Look in About phone
To find which Samsung phone you have, open Settings and tap About phone. The model name and model number sit right at the top, and that's all you need to buy the right case.
-
Open Settings
Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon, or open Settings from the app drawer.
-
Scroll to the bottom and tap About phone
It's the last item on the main Settings list on most Galaxy phones.
-
Read the Model name
This is the friendly name, such as Galaxy S26 Ultra or Galaxy Z Flip7. Use it when you shop.
-
Note the Model number
It starts with SM-, for example SM-S942U. It's listed on the same screen as the model name.
Go by About phone, not the seller's listing. It's the quickest way to catch an S25 that was listed as an S25+.
02How to read a Samsung model number
Samsung model numbers look cryptic, but they follow a pattern. Take SM-S948U:
- SM means it's a Samsung mobile device.
- S is the series. S for the Galaxy S line, F for foldables (Z Fold and Z Flip), A for the Galaxy A line.
- 948 identifies the exact model. Here it's the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
- U is the region. U is a US carrier model, U1 is a US model sold without a carrier, W is Canada, and B is a common international version.
| Phone | Base model number | US carrier example |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 | SM-S942 | SM-S942U |
| Galaxy S26+ | SM-S947 | SM-S947U |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | SM-S948 | SM-S948U |
| Galaxy S25 | SM-S931 | SM-S931U |
| Galaxy S25+ | SM-S936 | SM-S936U |
| Galaxy S25 Edge | SM-S937 | SM-S937U |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | SM-S938 | SM-S938U |
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | SM-S928 | SM-S928U |
| Galaxy Z Fold7 | SM-F966 | SM-F966U |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | SM-F766 | SM-F766U |
On the S25 series, 1 was the base model, 6 the Plus and 8 the Ultra. On the S26 series, the Plus moved to 7 (SM-S947), the digit the S25 Edge used. Match the full code to the table, or just trust the Model name line.
03Model name or model number: which one to use
For buying a case, screen protector or grip, the Model name is what you match. Case listings are organized by name (Galaxy S26, S26+, S26 Ultra), and every regional version of a model has the same body, so a US SM-S948U and an international SM-S948B take the same case.
The model number earns its keep in three situations: buying a used phone, where it confirms the listing is honest; checking network bands before you travel or switch carriers, since regional versions differ there; and looking up firmware or support pages on samsung.com.
Longer codes on the box
The box and some receipts show a longer code, such as SM-A156WZKAXAC. That's the model (SM-A156W, a Canadian Galaxy A15 5G) plus extra letters for color and sales market. Read the first part, up to and including the region letters, and ignore the tail.
Galaxy A phones follow the same logic as the S line: SM-A, then digits for the model. They're cheaper, sell in more sizes, and share fewer accessories with each other, so the exact Model name matters even more there.
04No access to Settings? Other places to look
- The box. The label lists the model name and full SM- number.
- Samsung Members app. Open the Support tab and tap your device's name at the top for its details.
- Your carrier account or receipt. The device page shows the model you were sold.
- The back of the phone. Samsung prints the IMEI and serial number in small text near the bottom, and your carrier can look up the model from either one.
Dialing *#06# shows the IMEI and serial number on most Galaxy phones. That's handy for insurance claims or carrier paperwork, though it won't show the model name.
05Why the exact Galaxy model matters for cases
Galaxy cases are cut for one model and one size. A Galaxy S26 case won't fit an S26+ or S26 Ultra, and cases rarely carry across generations because the camera rings and button positions move. The Ultra also has its own shape, with a slot at the bottom for the S Pen. If you're upgrading within the S line, check whether an S25 case fits the S26 before you reuse anything.
Many Galaxy phones have no built-in charging magnets, so a magnetic case is what lets them use MagSafe-compatible wallets, grips and chargers. Our guide on whether Samsung has MagSafe explains the options. And set your phone once in Find My Phone to see only gear that fits.
Each listing covers several models. Pick yours in the options.
