01Why the cover screen needs protection
If you're shopping for a Galaxy Z Flip cover screen protector, you've already spotted the weak point. When a Flip is closed, the cover screen is the only glass facing out, and it rides in pockets and bags next to keys and coins.
On the Z Flip7 and Z Flip8, the cover screen (Samsung calls it the FlexWindow) is a 4.1-inch display that fills most of the top half of the back. You use it for notifications, widgets, the camera viewfinder and full apps, so a scratch right through it is something you'll see every day. Repairs on foldable displays aren't cheap either. A protector costs a fraction and takes ten minutes to fit.

02Will a Flip7 protector fit a Flip8?
On paper the two cover screens look the same: both are 4.1 inches at the same resolution. The bodies are close too, but not identical.
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | Galaxy Z Flip8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cover screen | 4.1 in, 948 x 1048 | 4.1 in, 948 x 1048 |
| Folded (H x W x D) | 85.5 x 75.2 x 13.7 mm | 85.7 x 75.4 x 13.1 mm |
| Unfolded (H x W x D) | 166.7 x 75.2 x 6.5 mm | 166.9 x 75.4 x 6.1 mm |

Our advice: buy a protector listed for the Flip8 if you have a Flip8. Matching screen size doesn't guarantee matching camera cutouts, corner radius or the gap to the frame, and a protector that's a millimeter off lifts at the edges and catches dust. The same goes for cases. The Flip8 is a touch thinner and slightly taller, so a Flip7 case may be loose or cover the wrong spots.
Some cases have a raised lip around the cover screen that pushes on the edge of a full-cover protector. Pick a case-friendly protector, or a case with cover-screen protection built in.
03The inner screen: leave the factory film alone
Every Flip ships with a protective film already applied to the main folding screen. It isn't a shipping sticker. Samsung's guidance is that removing it, or adding a non-official film, can cause touch problems and screen damage, and that you should visit a service center if the film needs replacing.
- Don't peel it, even if the edges lift slightly. Service centers can replace it.
- Don't add tempered glass inside. Glass can't fold, so it would crack or stop the phone closing.
- Keep the inside clean. A grain of grit pressed between the halves when you close the phone can mark the screen. Wipe it with a soft cloth, not a paper towel.
- No sharp objects on the inner screen. Fingernails pressed hard can dent the plastic surface.

04Glass or film for the cover screen?
The cover screen doesn't fold, so you can use tempered glass there. We'd pick glass for most people. It feels like the original screen and takes the hit instead of the display.
+Tempered glass: why we pick it
- Feels and swipes like the real screen
- Absorbs impacts and cracks instead of the display
- Easier to install without bubbles
–Plastic film: the trade-offs
- Scratches more easily than glass
- Does little against drops and pressure
- Can feel slightly draggy under your finger
Film's one real advantage is thinness, so it rarely clashes with a tight case. Either way, check the listing names your exact model. If you want the details on materials, read tempered glass vs plastic.
05How to fit a cover screen protector
-
Close the phone and power it off
A dark screen shows dust better, and you won't trigger apps while you work.
-
Clean it properly
Use the alcohol wipe, then the microfiber cloth, then the dust sticker. Pay attention to the area around the cameras, where lint hides.
-
Dry-fit first
Hold the protector over the screen without peeling it. Line up the camera cutouts and edges so you know exactly where it goes.
-
Peel and place in one move
Hold it by the edges, line up the cutouts, and lower it. Press from the center outward with the card from the kit.
-
Push out any bubbles
Small bubbles usually clear within a day. Dust bubbles won't; lift the corner with tape, dab the dust off, and lay it back down.

These cases are made for earlier Flips. Check the model range in the title before you buy.
Questions people ask
Does the Galaxy Z Flip need a cover screen protector?
We'd recommend one. The cover screen is exposed whenever the phone is closed and shares pockets with keys and coins. A tempered glass protector made for your exact model is cheap insurance against scratches and cracks.
Should I remove the screen protector on my Z Flip's inner screen?
No. It's a factory-applied film that's part of the display. Samsung says removing it or adding a non-official film can cause touch problems or damage. If it needs replacing, a Samsung service center can do it.
Can I use tempered glass on a Z Flip?
On the cover screen, yes. On the inner folding screen, no. Glass can't bend, so it would crack or stop the phone from closing properly.
Do Z Flip7 screen protectors fit the Z Flip8?
Both cover screens are 4.1 inches at the same resolution, but cutouts and edges can differ between generations. Buy a protector listed for your exact model so it doesn't lift at the edges.
Is the Galaxy Z Flip8 waterproof?
It's rated IP48, which covers water immersion but only limited protection against dust. Keep it away from sand and grit, especially near the hinge.
