01What's your case made of?
Soap, water, then dry it fully
Off the phone, silicone can be washed with warm water and mild soap and rinsed. Disinfect with a wrung-out alcohol wipe if you need to. Let it air-dry completely.
Silicone casesThe easiest case to disinfect
Wash with soap and water, then wipe with a 70% alcohol wipe. Yellowing is aging, not dirt, so don't scrub it with bleach.
Clear casesGentle soap only, no alcohol
Use a cloth with warm water and mild hand soap, barely damp. Skip alcohol and disinfecting wipes; they dry out and discolor the finish.
Wipeable casesDamp cloth, light touch
Wipe the smooth shell with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. A lightly wrung alcohol wipe on the outer shell is usually fine, but spot-test first.
Aramid casesTo clean and disinfect a phone case properly, you do it in two passes: clean off the grime with soap and water, then disinfect the surface. Disinfectant doesn't work well through a layer of skin oil and lint, which is why wiping a dirty case with an alcohol wipe alone leaves it less clean than you think.
02The basic routine for any case
-
Take the phone out
Grime builds up between the case and the phone, especially around the camera cutout and charging port. Pull out any cards or a MagSafe-compatible wallet too.
-
Brush out corners and cutouts
A soft dry toothbrush clears lint from button covers, the camera ring and the speaker holes.
-
Clean with mild soap
Wipe inside and out with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of mild dish or hand soap. Rinse the cloth and wipe again with plain water.
-
Disinfect if the material allows
Use a 70% isopropyl or 75% ethyl alcohol wipe, or a Clorox Disinfecting Wipe, on smooth, hard, nonporous surfaces. Follow the wet time on the wipe's label for it to work.
-
Dry completely
Air-dry or pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Trapped moisture between case and phone is how you get a damp charging port.
-
Clean the phone before it goes back in
Wipe the phone's back and sides too, keeping moisture out of openings. See how to clean a phone screen for the front.
Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, acetone, magic erasers and dishwashers. They cloud clear cases, strip coatings and warp soft materials. And don't spray disinfectant onto a case while the phone is still in it.
03Case-by-case cleaning guide
| Material | Clean with | Disinfect with alcohol? | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid silicone | Warm water, mild soap; can rinse under the tap off the phone | Yes, wrung-out wipe | Lint pickup; stickiness as it ages |
| Clear TPU | Soap and water | Yes | Yellowing that won't wash out |
| Polycarbonate or rugged hard shell | Soap and water, brush the seams | Yes | Grime between layers |
| Aramid fiber | Damp cloth, drop of mild soap | Light wipe on the outer shell; spot-test | Don't soak the edges |
| Leather or faux leather | Barely damp cloth, mild hand soap | No | Water spots, drying, color loss |
| Fabric or woven | Weak detergent solution, then a clean damp cloth | No | Soaking; slow drying |
Silicone
Silicone is the most forgiving. Once it's off the phone you can wash it in the sink with warm soapy water, rinse it and let it dry overnight. Silicone attracts lint, so dry it with a lint-free cloth, not a towel. If your case has turned tacky, that's the material breaking down; see why silicone cases get sticky.
Clear TPU and polycarbonate
These smooth plastics are the easiest to disinfect, and alcohol wipes are fine on them. The yellow tint clear TPU picks up over months comes from UV light, heat and skin oils changing the plastic itself. Cleaning removes the grime on top, but it won't fully reverse the yellow. Our blog has a full routine for cleaning a clear phone case.
Leather and fabric
No alcohol here. Apple's guidance for its leather cases is a clean cloth with warm water and mild hand soap, and to avoid prolonged water contact and sun. For fabric, Apple suggests about a teaspoon of liquid detergent in a cup of water, a gentle rub, then wiping with fresh water and drying fully. If you need to disinfect your case daily, leather and fabric aren't the right material; our leather vs silicone comparison covers the trade-offs.
Aramid fiber
Aramid cases are thin and usually have a smooth finish over the weave. A damp cloth with a little mild soap handles everyday grime. Keep water away from the edges and cutouts, where the weave is exposed. Learn more about the material in our aramid fiber case guide.
04How often to clean, and when to replace
A quick wipe once a week and a full soap-and-water clean every month or so is plenty for most people. Disinfect more often after you've been sick, after flights or gyms, or if your workplace requires it.

Questions people ask
Can I use alcohol wipes on my phone case?
On smooth, nonporous cases such as clear TPU, polycarbonate and silicone, a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe is fine. Don't use alcohol on leather or fabric, which Apple's guidance specifically excludes, and squeeze out excess liquid before wiping.
Can I put my phone case in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher heat and detergent can warp TPU, cloud clear plastic and loosen glued parts such as magnet rings. Hand-wash with warm water and mild soap instead.
How do I get the yellow out of a clear case?
Usually you can't fully. Yellowing is a change in the plastic from UV light, heat and skin oils, not surface dirt. Soap and water removes grime on top; avoid bleach, which can damage the case. Replacing it is often the real fix.
How do you disinfect a leather phone case?
Gently. Wipe it with a cloth barely dampened with warm water and mild hand soap, then let it dry away from heat and sun. Avoid alcohol and disinfecting wipes, which can dry out and discolor leather.
How often should I clean my phone case?
Wipe it weekly and give it a full soap-and-water clean about once a month. Disinfect more often after illness, travel or if you work in healthcare or food service.
