01How often should you replace your phone case? Read the signs
You should replace your phone case whenever it can no longer absorb a drop or hold the phone securely, which for most cases happens somewhere between one and two years. A case that looks tired but fits tightly is still working. A case that looks fine but has a hairline crack in a corner isn't.
One failed check is reason enough. A cracked corner is the most important: corners take most of the energy in a fall, and a split one passes that energy straight into the phone.
02How long each material usually lasts
Materials wear out in different ways. Knowing which way yours fails tells you what to look for.
| Material | Typical useful life | How it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Clear TPU (soft clear) | 6–12 months | Yellows, then stretches and loosens |
| Colored TPU | 1–2 years | Edges stretch, buttons go soft |
| Silicone | 1–2 years | Gets sticky or shiny, picks up lint, loosens |
| Polycarbonate (hard) | 1–2+ years | Cracks at corners after hard drops |
| Rubberized / soft-touch coating | 1–2 years | Coating wears shiny at the edges |
| Aramid fiber | 2+ years | Rarely wears; check edges and camera ring |
| Leather | 2+ years | Darkens and scuffs (often on purpose); stitching can loosen |
Why does clear go first? Soft clear TPU reacts to UV light and to oils from your hands, and the yellowing can't be scrubbed out. Clear vs colored cases explains the chemistry. If your silicone case feels tacky, sticky silicone case covers what helps and when it's beyond saving.
03It just looks old. Should you still swap it?
Cosmetic wear and protective wear are different things. Scuffed edges, a faded color or a shiny patch where your thumb rests are cosmetic. A case can look rough for another year and still take a drop perfectly well, as long as it passes the inspection above.
+Keeping a worn-looking case
- Still protects if corners, fit and lip are intact
- No waste, no spend
- Worn rubberized and leather finishes often grip better
–The catch
- Grit trapped inside can scratch the phone's frame
- Faded coatings can turn sticky later
- A yellowed clear case won't come back
A good rule: replace for function, upgrade for taste. If the case passes every check but you're tired of it, that's a fine reason to buy a new one, but there's no safety reason to rush. If it fails even one check, replace it before the next drop finds the weak spot.
Also think about your screen protector at the same time. A worn case lip that no longer clears the glass can chip the protector's edges, and chipped glass is the cue to replace that too. See how often to replace a screen protector.
04The hygiene reason nobody mentions
Cases collect skin oil, lint and grime in seams and button covers, and a phone goes everywhere your hands do. Cleaning a case every couple of weeks keeps it looking new longer. Replacing it makes sense when grime is trapped under peeling coating or in cracks where a cloth can't reach.
-
Take the case off
Ease it off from a corner near the camera. Stuck? Try these tricks for tight cases.
-
Wash plastic and silicone cases
Warm water and a drop of dish soap, with a soft toothbrush for seams. Rinse and let it dry completely before refitting.
-
Wipe the phone too
Apple says you can use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe on the phone's exterior. Avoid openings, and skip bleach and abrasives.
-
Treat leather separately
Don't soak it. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and let it air-dry away from heat.
Clear cases have their own routine on our blog: how to clean a clear phone case.
05Make your next case last longer
- Keep it out of heat. Dashboards and sunny windowsills soften TPU and speed up yellowing.
- Don't take it off daily. Every removal stretches soft cases a little.
- Pick a less fragile material. Frosted or colored backs hide wear; aramid fiber and hard polycarbonate keep their shape.
- Clean it before it gets grimy, not after.
- Use magnetic gear on a magnetic case. Pulling accessories off a non-magnetic case scuffs it fast.
Even same-size phones change camera layouts and buttons from year to year. Check fit before reusing one, for example will an iPhone 16 case fit the iPhone 17.
From our own lines for iPhone 14–16: a frosted finish that hides wear, a rubberized grip case and aramid fiber.
Questions people ask
Is it OK to use the same phone case for years?
Yes, if it still fits snugly, has no cracks, and the lip still holds the screen off a table. Hard cases, aramid fiber and leather often last as long as the phone. Soft clear cases usually don't.
Can you fix a yellowed clear case?
Cleaning removes surface grime, but the yellow tint in soft TPU is a change in the material itself and won't wash out. If the yellowing bothers you, replace it and consider a frosted or hard polycarbonate clear back next time.
Does a stretched case still protect my phone?
Less well. A loose case can shift or pop off on impact, exposing corners at the worst moment. If the phone moves inside it or the edges lift, it's time for a new one.
Do magnetic cases lose their magnetism?
The magnets themselves hold their strength for years in normal use. When magnetic accessories stop holding, the usual cause is a magnet ring that has shifted or come loose inside the case, or extra thickness like a sticker or card added on top.
Should I replace my case after a big drop?
Inspect it first. Check the corners for cracks or stress whitening and make sure the fit hasn't changed. If it absorbed a hard hit and shows any damage, replace it; it won't protect the same way twice.
