What iPhone Air charger do you need? 20W does the job

The iPhone Air is one of the easiest iPhones to buy a charger for. A modest USB-C brick hits Apple's fastest wired number. MagSafe is where people get it wrong.

01The iPhone Air charger that matches Apple's numbers

For the iPhone Air, a 20W USB-C Power Delivery charger is enough to get Apple's quoted 50% in about 30 minutes. Bigger chargers are safe and give you room for other gadgets, but they won't make the Air itself dramatically faster by cable.

That makes the Air different from the iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro, where Apple's best wired times need a 40W or 60W adapter. The Air is a 5.64 mm thin phone with a smaller battery than the Pro models, and Apple pitches it with the add-on MagSafe Battery for long days. Here's how the charging specs stack up.

Port
USB-C
Fastest wired
Up to 50% in 30 min with a 20W+ adapter
MagSafe
Up to 20W; 50% in 30 min with a 30W+ adapter
Qi2
Up to 20W
Video playback
Up to 27 hrs; up to 40 hrs with Apple's MagSafe Battery
Weight
165 g

Already own an iPhone charger? If it's a USB-C brick of 20W or more from an iPhone 12 or later, keep using it. It's a perfect match. If it's the old square 5W USB-A cube, replace it. It will charge the Air, just very slowly. See can I use a higher-watt charger if you're wondering whether a laptop brick is safe (it is).

02Speeds by charger type

Charger iPhone Air speed Our take
20W USB-C PD 50% in about 30 min The sensible default
30W+ USB-C PD About the same by cable Buy it to run MagSafe or charge a laptop
Apple MagSafe Charger + 30W adapter Up to 20W; 50% in about 30 min As fast as wired, no cable
Apple MagSafe Charger + 20W adapter Below 20W Works, slower
Qi2 magnetic charger Up to 20W on Qi2 25W models Good third-party option
15W MagSafe-compatible charger Up to 15W Nightstand and car
Basic Qi pad Up to 7.5W Overnight only
5W USB-A cube Slow Time to retire it

The MagSafe mistake

People pair a MagSafe puck with the 20W brick they already own and wonder why it's slow. For the Air's full 20W wireless, the adapter behind the puck needs to be 30W or more.

03Estimate your charge time

How long will my iPhone Air take?Preset to a compact iPhone battery and a 20W charger. Switch to magnetic or a basic pad to compare.

Apple doesn't publish the Air's battery capacity or peak wired wattage, so treat the tool as a ballpark. The phone max is set to 20W because that's the adapter size Apple quotes for the fastest wired time. Play with the method buttons and you'll see the real gap: a basic Qi pad takes several times longer than a cable or a proper magnetic charger.

Car charging follows the same rules. A USB-C car charger with a 20W or bigger port matches the Air's best wired speed, while an old USB-A car adapter will barely keep up with navigation and music. If your car has a built-in wireless pad, expect basic Qi speeds unless it's a newer magnetic one, and expect the phone to run warm in summer sun.

04Wired or wireless for a phone this thin?

Both are fine for the battery. Wireless charging makes a bit more heat, and iOS slows charging when the phone is warm, so a cable is the better pick for quick top-ups. Magnetic charging wins at the bedside and desk, where you want to set the phone down without fumbling for the port.

Our pick

20W USB-C cable

Best for quick top-ups
  • Matches Apple's fastest wired time
  • Cheapest setup
  • Coolest running

MagSafe or Qi2 + 30W adapter

Best for nightstand and desk
  • Up to 20W wireless
  • Snaps into place
  • Needs the bigger adapter

Magnetic power bank

Best for long days out
  • Clips on and charges as you go
  • Adds thickness to a thin phone
  • Slower than a cable

If you're putting a case on the Air, a MagSafe-compatible case keeps magnetic chargers lined up. Our iPhone Air case guide covers which cases stay thin.

05Battery life tips that beat a faster charger

The Air's battery is its trade-off, so a few habits matter more than charger wattage.

Questions people ask

What wattage charger does the iPhone Air need?

20W or more over USB-C Power Delivery. Apple says that gets the Air to 50% in about 30 minutes. For MagSafe at full speed, use a 30W or higher adapter.

Does the iPhone Air come with a charger?

No. It comes with a USB-C cable only. Any USB-C PD charger works, and a 20W one is enough for the fastest wired charging Apple quotes.

How fast does the iPhone Air charge with MagSafe?

Up to 20W with Apple's MagSafe Charger or a Qi2 charger. Apple quotes 50% in about 30 minutes when the MagSafe Charger is plugged into a 30W or higher adapter.

Is a 30W or 35W charger worth it for the iPhone Air?

Only if you use MagSafe or want to share it with an iPad or laptop. By cable, Apple's fastest figure for the Air already uses a 20W adapter.

Can I use my old Lightning-era 20W adapter with the iPhone Air?

Yes, as long as it's a USB-C adapter. Apple's 20W USB-C adapter from earlier iPhones works with the Air's USB-C cable and gives you full wired speed.
