01What speeds up charging the most
To make your phone charge faster, fix the hardware first: a USB-C fast charger that matches your phone, a cable that can carry the power, and a wall outlet rather than a laptop port. Habits like airplane mode and keeping the phone cool help, but they're the finishing touches, not the main event.
| Change | Impact | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Old 5W USB-A cube to USB-C PD charger | Huge, especially in the first half hour | A new charger |
| Laptop USB-A port to wall outlet | Huge | Free |
| Wireless pad to cable | Large | Free |
| Phone hot to phone cool | Large when it's warm | Free |
| Old or damaged cable to a good USB-C cable | Medium to large | A new cable |
| Screen off, phone idle | Medium | Free |
| Airplane mode or phone off | Small to medium | Free |
| Low Power Mode or Power saving on | Small | Free |
02Free tricks that work right now
-
Use the wall, not the laptop
A standard USB-A port on a computer supplies as little as 2.5W (USB 2.0) or 4.5W (USB 3.0). A wall charger with USB-C fast charging can deliver several times that. Car USB-A ports are often just as weak.
-
Pick up the cable, not the pad
Wireless charging is slower and loses power as heat. A basic Qi pad tops out at 7.5W on iPhone. When you need 30% before leaving, plug in.
-
Cool it down
Phones slow charging when the battery warms up, and some pause it entirely. Take a thick case off, move it out of the sun and off soft surfaces. If it's already hot, give it 10 minutes unplugged in a cool spot.
-
Stop using it
Games, video calls, navigation and screen brightness all take power that would otherwise go into the battery. Lock it and leave it face down.
-
Switch on airplane mode, or turn it off
Cutting the radios trims background drain, especially on weak signal. A phone that's powered off charges fastest of all, if you can live without it for a bit.
-
Charge from low, not from 90%
Phones charge fastest in the first half of the battery and slow way down near full. A 15-minute top-up from 20% gives you far more than the same 15 minutes from 80%.
Apps that claim to speed up charging can't change how your phone's charging chip works. The only real gains come from the charger, cable, temperature and what the phone is doing.
03The right charger and cable
Here's what a better charger does to your charge time. Pick your phone and slide the charger wattage:
Two numbers decide the result: your phone's maximum wired speed and the charger's output. Below your phone's max, more watts helps a lot. Above it, nothing changes. A 20W USB-C PD charger is the sweet spot for most iPhones. Samsung and Pixel phones also need the charger to support PPS to reach their fastest modes. How to choose a phone charger lists the right size per phone.
Then check the cable. A frayed, bent or very cheap cable can quietly limit the current. Use USB-C to USB-C (or USB-C to Lightning on older iPhones), and pick a 100W-rated cable if your phone charges at 45W or more. See our USB-C cables, or the charging cable guide for the details.
04Settings that slow charging on purpose
Your phone may be slowing itself down to protect the battery. That's usually a good thing overnight, but you can switch it off when you need speed.
- iPhone: Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit (iPhone 15 and later) live in Settings > Battery > Charging. On iPhone 14 and earlier, Optimized Battery Charging is in Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. These hold charging at 80%, they don't slow the first 80%.
- Samsung Galaxy: make sure Fast charging and Super fast charging are on in Settings > Battery > Charging settings. Our step-by-step for Samsung covers it.
- Pixel: Adaptive Charging in the Battery settings stretches overnight charging so it reaches 100% as you wake. It only kicks in when an alarm or routine suggests you're sleeping.
If your phone sits at 80% and won't budge, that's a setting or heat, not slow charging. iPhone owners can check why it stops at 80%. If none of this helps, our slow charging troubleshooter finds the bottleneck with a quick test.
05Your faster-charging checklist
That last one surprises people. Pocket lint can stop a cable seating fully, which makes charging slow or intermittent. How to clean a USB-C port shows the safe way.

Questions people ask
Does airplane mode make your phone charge faster?
A little. It stops the radios from searching for signal and syncing in the background, so more power goes into the battery. The effect is biggest when you have weak signal. Turning the phone off entirely helps more.
Why does my phone charge slowly on my laptop?
Most USB-A laptop ports supply only 2.5W to 4.5W, a fraction of a wall fast charger. A laptop's USB-C port can be faster if it supports USB Power Delivery, but a wall charger is still the quicker option.
Will a higher-watt charger charge my phone faster?
Only up to your phone's own maximum. Going from 5W to 20W is a big jump for an iPhone. Going from 25W to 100W does nothing extra for a phone capped at 25W, though the bigger charger is still safe to use.
Why does charging slow down after 80%?
Phones deliberately cut the current as the battery gets full to protect it from stress and heat. That's why the last 20% can take nearly as long as the first half. Optimized charging settings may also pause at 80%.
Does charging with the case on slow it down?
On a cable, only if the case traps heat and the phone warms up. On a wireless charger, a thick case or one with metal can slow charging a lot. Take it off if the phone feels warm.
