01Why some styluses work on phones and others don't
Do styluses work on phones? A capacitive stylus does, on any phone, because it fools the screen into thinking it's a finger. Phone screens sense the small electrical charge in your skin. A capacitive stylus has a conductive tip that carries that charge from your hand to the glass.
Active pens are different. They have electronics in the tip and talk to a matching layer in the screen, which is how you get pressure sensitivity, palm rejection and hover. The phone has to be built for that specific pen. A plastic pen with no conductive tip, like the old resistive-screen styluses, won't register at all.
| Stylus type | Works on iPhone? | Works on Android? | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rubber or silicone dome tip | Yes | Yes | Tapping, scrolling, gloves-on use |
| Clear disc tip | Yes | Yes | Precise taps, notes, games with small targets |
| Mesh or fiber tip | Yes | Yes | Smooth glide for sketching |
| Samsung S Pen | No | Only on S Pen-compatible Galaxy models | Handwriting, drawing, signing |
| Apple Pencil | No | No | iPad only |
02Phones with their own pen support
If you want a real pen experience on a phone, the list is short, and it's gotten shorter.
- Galaxy S26 Ultra
- S Pen built in, stored in the phone. No Bluetooth, so no Air Actions
- Galaxy S25 Ultra
- S Pen built in, also without Bluetooth
- Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Fold8
- No S Pen support
- Galaxy Z Fold6 and earlier Folds back to Fold3
- Supported the separate S Pen Fold Edition
- iPhone (any model)
- No active pen support. Apple Pencil is iPad only
- Motorola moto g stylus line
- Built-in passive stylus
The regular and Plus Galaxy S models don't support the S Pen; it needs the digitizer layer in the Ultra. If you use a magnetic case on an S26 Ultra and the pen starts skipping, that's a known issue with some magnetic accessories. Our S26 Ultra S Pen case guide explains the trade-off.
Samsung dropped S Pen support from the Z Fold7 and didn't bring it back on the Fold8. Before buying a phone for its pen, check the manufacturer's spec page for that exact model.
03Who actually benefits from a passive stylus
A $5 to $15 capacitive stylus isn't a drawing tablet. It's a precise fingertip that doesn't smudge the screen. That's useful for more people than you'd think.
- Larger fingers or reduced dexterity. Small buttons and keyboards are easier to hit. Our phone accessories for seniors page has more ideas.
- Cold weather and gloves. A stylus works when your gloves don't.
- Delivery drivers and field workers signing on screens all day. See accessories for delivery drivers.
- Long fingernails, which make accurate taps tricky.
- Mobile puzzle and strategy games with small targets, where a disc tip helps.
+Passive stylus upsides
- Works on any phone and tablet
- No charging or pairing
- Cheap, so losing one doesn't hurt
- Keeps fingerprints off the screen
–Limits
- No pressure sensitivity
- No palm rejection
- Rubber tips wear and get less responsive
- Not precise enough for fine art
04Rubber, disc or mesh: picking a tip
All three tip styles work on phones. They feel different, and the right one depends on what you'll do with it.
Rubber or silicone dome
The most common and the most forgiving. The soft dome is wide, around the size of a small fingertip, so it registers easily at any angle. That width also makes it imprecise: you can't see exactly where the tap lands. Fine for scrolling, typing and gloves-in-winter use. Domes wear out, so a stylus with a spare head, or one with a head on each end, lasts longer.
Clear disc
A thin plastic disc on a pivot. Because it's clear and sits flat, you can see the point underneath, which makes it the most accurate passive option for handwriting apps, small menu buttons and signing. It takes a few minutes to get used to holding it at the right angle, and it clicks slightly on the glass.
Mesh or fiber
A woven conductive tip that glides with less drag than rubber. Sketchers tend to prefer it. Like rubber, it's wide, so it's not as precise as a disc.
Want accuracy? Disc. Want easy? Rubber. Want glide? Mesh.If you can't decide, a two-ended stylus gives you two tips in one.
05How to get a capacitive stylus working smoothly
-
Hold it near the tip
Your hand completes the circuit through the barrel. A light, normal grip is enough; there's no need to press hard.
-
Keep your palm off the glass
Phones don't reject your palm for a passive stylus, so a resting hand registers as a touch. Float your hand or rest it below the screen.
-
Use the disc flat
A disc tip should sit flat on the glass. Tilting it on its edge makes taps miss.
-
Turn on glove or touch sensitivity mode
If taps feel weak, and especially with a screen protector, turn up touch sensitivity. On Galaxy phones it's in Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity. Other phones vary.
-
Replace worn tips
Rubber domes flatten and tear over time. A worn tip skips. Many styluses have spare or swappable tips.
A normal tempered glass protector doesn't stop a capacitive stylus. If taps stop registering after fitting one, check for air gaps or a thick protector. Our screen protector touch fix walks through it.
Capacitive styluses for iPhone and Android. No pairing or charging.

Questions people ask
Can I use an Apple Pencil on my iPhone?
No. Apple Pencil only works with compatible iPads. On an iPhone, use a passive capacitive stylus instead. It works like a fingertip, without pressure sensitivity.
Does a stylus work on any phone?
A capacitive stylus with a rubber, mesh or disc tip works on any modern touchscreen phone. Active pens like the S Pen only work on phones built for them.
Which Samsung phones work with the S Pen?
The Galaxy S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra have a built-in S Pen. The Z Fold7 and Z Fold8 don't support it. Older Folds from the Fold3 to Fold6 worked with the separate S Pen Fold Edition. Regular and Plus S models don't support it.
Will a stylus scratch my phone screen?
A clean rubber, mesh or plastic disc tip won't scratch tempered glass. Grit trapped on the tip can, so wipe it now and then. A screen protector adds a cheap layer of insurance.
Why is my stylus not working on my phone?
The usual causes are a worn rubber tip, holding the stylus by a non-conductive part, a thick screen protector, or a dirty screen. Try a fresh tip and turn on touch sensitivity in settings.
