01Read the pattern first

When screen protector touch is not working, the protector is either too far from the screen in places (a bubble, dust or lifted edge) or too thick for the phone's default touch settings. Watching where taps fail tells you which.

Open a drawing app or the notes app and drag a finger slowly across the whole screen, edge to edge, then along each side. Gaps in the line are your dead zones. Compare what you see with this table.

What happens Most likely cause First fix
Whole screen feels sluggish or needs a harder press Thick or privacy glass; touch sensitivity off Turn on touch sensitivity (Android); try thinner glass
Edges and corners ignore swipes Edges lifted or not bonded on a curved screen Re-seat edges, check the case lip
One spot never responds Bubble, trapped dust or a crack Lift and clean, or replace
Phone taps things by itself Ghost touch from a crack, moisture or the charger Unplug, dry the screen, inspect the glass
Keyboard keys hit the wrong letter Protector shifted or sits off-center Reinstall it straight
Problems started after a drop Cracked protector or display Remove the protector and test bare

02Turn on touch sensitivity for screen protectors (Android)

Samsung and Google both build in a setting that boosts touch sensitivity for screen protectors. It's off by default on many phones, and it's the single most common fix for a sluggish feel after fitting glass.

  1. Samsung Galaxy

Go to Settings > Display and switch on Touch sensitivity. On some models you can also add it as a Quick Settings tile.

  2. Google Pixel

Go to Settings > Display (labelled Display & touch on newer software) and turn on Screen protector mode, called Increase touch sensitivity on older Pixels. Recent Pixels can switch this on automatically when they detect a protector, so check it hasn't been turned off.

  3. Other Android phones

Search Settings for "touch sensitivity", "glove mode" or "screen protector". The name varies by brand.

  4. Test again

Repeat the drag test from above. If the whole screen now responds, you're done.

On iPhone?

iPhones don't have a screen protector sensitivity toggle. A standard glass protector shouldn't need one. If touch got worse after fitting glass, the cause is almost always fit: an edge, a bubble or a protector that's too thick.

03When the glass itself is the problem

Capacitive screens sense your finger through the glass. Every extra layer adds distance. A typical thin tempered glass protector is close enough that you won't notice, but some heavy-duty, privacy or double-layer protectors push the limit, especially combined with a dry winter fingertip.

Our pick

Thin clear glass

Best for touch feel
  • Closest to a bare screen
  • Works with in-display fingerprint sensors more often
  • Enough for everyday knocks and scratches

Thick or privacy glass

Best if you need privacy or extra impact cover
  • Can feel slightly less responsive
  • Privacy filters can make the screen look dimmer
  • More likely to clash with a raised case lip

Cheap protectors cause problems that have nothing to do with thickness. Weak adhesive that only grips the border leaves an air gap in the middle, and poorly cut glass sits on top of a curved edge instead of against it. If your protector has a visible rainbow sheen or a silvery band at the sides, it isn't bonded.

Matte protectors are worth a mention too. The textured surface cuts glare and fingerprints, but it adds a little drag to swipes, and some people read that as poor responsiveness. If taps register fine but scrolling feels sticky, the finish is the reason, not the sensor. A clear glossy protector feels closest to the bare screen.

04Fixing dead spots and dead edges

A bubble the size of a pea is enough to stop taps in that spot. Clear air bubbles push out with a card wrapped in a microfiber cloth; bubbles with a dust speck in the middle need the corner lifted. Our screen protector bubbles guide has both methods.

Dead edges are almost always lift. Take the case off and press firmly along each edge for ten seconds. If touch comes back and then fails again once the case is on, the case lip is prying the protector up. The edges lifting guide covers case-friendly sizes.

Bubbles and lift usually show up in the first day, while the adhesive is still settling. If touch was fine for months and only now started failing in one area, look for a new crack or a chip at the edge, since even a small one can let the glass pull away from the screen.

Clean fingers help more than you'd think

Lotion, hand sanitizer and grease all reduce how well a protector senses your finger. Wipe the screen and your hands before you decide the glass is faulty.

05Two-minute test: protector or phone?

Work down this list

If the bare screen still misses taps after all that, the protector was never the problem. Update the phone's software, then contact Apple, Samsung or Google support. If the phone is also tapping things on its own, read our guide to ghost touch first.

Questions people ask

Why is my touch screen not working after putting on a screen protector?

The protector is either not fully bonded (bubbles, dust or lifted edges create gaps) or it's thick enough to need the phone's touch sensitivity setting. Turn that on if you have Android, then check the edges and bubbles.

Do screen protectors reduce touch sensitivity?

A thin, well-fitted glass protector has no noticeable effect on most phones. Thick, privacy or poorly bonded protectors can make the screen feel less responsive, especially near the edges.

How do I increase touch sensitivity on Samsung?

Open Settings, tap Display, and turn on Touch sensitivity. It's meant for use with screen protectors and makes the screen react to lighter touches.

Is there a touch sensitivity setting on iPhone?

No, not for screen protectors. iPhone's Touch settings under Accessibility change how long a press takes to register, not how sensitive the glass is. Fix the protector's fit or use thinner glass instead.

Can a screen protector cause ghost touches?

Yes, usually when it's cracked, lifted or has moisture trapped under it. Removing or replacing the protector normally stops it. If phantom taps continue with no protector, the screen or a charger is the more likely cause.
