Ghost touch on your phone screen: what causes it and how to stop it

Apps opening by themselves, random typing, screens scrolling on their own. It looks like a haunted phone, but it's almost always one of four ordinary causes.

01Find your likely cause

Ghost touch on a phone screen is when the touch sensor registers taps and swipes nobody made. The usual suspects are a damaged or lifted screen protector, electrical noise from a charger, moisture, and, less often, a faulty display.

What's causing your ghost touch?Three questions. Answer for when the phantom taps happen most.
When does it happen?

Most likely

Charger or cable interference

Unplug and see if the taps stop. If they do, try a different charger and cable. Cheap or damaged chargers with noisy output are a well-known cause.

Your screen protector

A crack, lifted edge or trapped moisture under the glass can trigger touches. Remove it and test the bare screen. If the problem stops, fit a new one.

Most likely

Water or sweat on the screen

Dry the screen and your hands, take the case off and let the phone sit for a while. Water droplets register as touches on capacitive screens.

Possibly

A display or hardware fault

Rule out the protector and charger first. If ghost touch continues with both removed and after a restart and update, book a repair with the manufacturer.

02Chargers that make the screen misbehave

A touchscreen measures tiny changes in electrical charge. A charger with poor filtering or a damaged cable can add electrical noise to the phone, and the touch controller reads that noise as fingers. The tell-tale sign is simple: phantom taps while plugged in that stop the moment you unplug.

It's most common with unbranded or counterfeit chargers, but a worn cable from a good brand can do it too. Swap one at a time, cable first, so you know which part was at fault. Our guide on how to spot a fake charger lists the warning signs, and is it safe to use a non-Apple charger explains which certifications to look for.

Touching the phone while it charges

Some phones only show ghost touch when they're charging and you're not holding them, or only when they're lying on a metal surface. Try using it on a wooden table or in your hand to see if the pattern changes.

03How a screen protector causes phantom taps

Your protector sits right on top of the touch sensor, so anything wrong with it lands exactly where the phone is listening.

  • Cracks. A broken protector can press unevenly on the display or let moisture creep in along the crack. If yours is cracked, read our guide on cracked screen protectors.
  • Lifted edges. A case lip pushing on a lifted edge can register as a constant press along that side. The edges lifting fix covers it.
  • Moisture under the glass. Wet-applied film protectors, or a protector fitted in a steamy bathroom, can trap water that acts like a fingertip.
  • Dust and grit under the edge holding the protector slightly away from the screen in one spot.

The test is clean: take the protector off. If ghost touch stops on the bare screen, the protector caused it, and a fresh, well-fitted one won't.

04Fixes to try, in order

  1. Unplug and dry

Disconnect the charger. Wipe the screen and your hands with a dry microfiber cloth.

  2. Take the case off

This removes pressure on the protector edges and rules out a case lip pressing the screen.

  3. Restart the phone

On iPhone, force restart: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On Android, hold the power button (or power and volume down on many Galaxy phones) and tap Restart.

  4. Remove the screen protector

Peel from a corner with a tape tab. If it's cracked, tape over it first. Our removal guide has the details.

  5. Update the software

Touch controller bugs do get fixed in updates. Install any pending iOS or Android update.

  6. Try Android safe mode

On most Android phones, hold the power button, then press and hold Power off until Safe mode appears. If ghost touch stops in safe mode, a third-party app is involved.

05Signs the screen itself is failing

It's probably hardware if
Screen lifting from the frame?

A display that bulges or separates from the phone's body can mean a swollen battery pushing it out. Stop charging it, don't press on it, and take it to the manufacturer or an authorized repair shop.

For a confirmed hardware fault, contact Apple, Samsung or Google support, or an authorized repair shop. If the phone is still under warranty, don't open it yourself. Once it's repaired, a fresh protector and a good charger keep the problem from coming back.

Questions people ask

What causes ghost touch on a phone?

The most common causes are a cracked or lifted screen protector, electrical noise from a faulty charger or cable, water on the screen, and software glitches. A damaged display or swollen battery can also cause it.

Can a screen protector cause ghost touch?

Yes. Cracks, lifted edges and moisture trapped under the protector can all register as touches. Remove it and test. If the phantom taps stop, replace the protector.

Why does my phone ghost touch only when charging?

The charger or cable is adding electrical noise that the touch sensor reads as input. Try a different, certified charger and a new cable. If the taps stop, the old charger or cable was the cause.

Can ghost touch be fixed?

Usually, yes. Most cases are fixed by replacing a damaged protector, changing the charger, drying the screen or restarting. If it persists with all of those ruled out, a screen repair typically solves it.

Is ghost touch a virus?

It's very unlikely. Ghost touch is almost always physical or electrical. If it stops in Android's safe mode, an app may be misbehaving, so uninstall recently added apps one at a time.
