01Same power, different plug
Lightning vs USB-C comes down to this: charging speed on an iPhone barely moved when Apple switched, but file transfers, accessory choice and cable sharing all improved. If you only ever charge your phone, the change is mostly about which cable is in the drawer.
Lightning is Apple's own 8-pin connector, introduced with the iPhone 5 in 2012. USB-C is the industry standard that Android phones, laptops, iPads and game consoles already used. Both are reversible, so neither one cares which way up you plug it in.

02When Apple switched, device by device
- 2012
- Lightning arrives on the iPhone 5
- 2018
- iPad Pro moves to USB-C
- 2022
- Entry-level iPad (10th gen) switches to USB-C
- 2023
- iPhone 15 and the AirPods Pro 2 case switch to USB-C
- Dec 2024
- EU common-charger rule applies to new phones sold there
The EU rule is why the change happened when it did. Apple stopped selling its last Lightning iPhones in Europe around the deadline, and the rest of its lineup has followed. If you bought an iPhone in the last couple of years, it's almost certainly USB-C. Not sure? Our guide to telling which iPhone you have takes a minute.
Plenty of Lightning gear is still in drawers and cars: older AirPods cases, Magic accessories, CarPlay cables, bedside docks. That's the real cost of the switch, and it's smaller than it looks.
03Where USB-C actually wins
- One cable for everything. The same USB-C to USB-C cable charges your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Galaxy tablet and Switch. Travel gets lighter fast.
- Much faster transfers on Pro models. 10 Gb/s is about 20 times Lightning's 480 Mbps. That matters if you shoot ProRes or 4K video and offload to a drive or Mac.
- Reverse charging by cable. Apple says USB-C iPhones can supply 4.5W to small accessories, so you can top up AirPods or an Apple Watch from your phone.
- Plug-and-play accessories. SSDs, card readers, microphones and Ethernet adapters connect without a special Apple dongle. See what USB OTG is for the details.
Apple ships a USB 2 cable even with Pro models. To get 10 Gb/s you need a cable rated USB 3 (10Gbps) or USB4. A charging cable will charge fine but transfer at Lightning-era speed. Our USB-C cable types guide shows how to tell them apart.
Charging is where expectations get ahead of reality. A Lightning iPhone fast-charges at around 20W from a USB-C PD charger, and that hasn't changed much. Newer models can draw more from a higher-watt brick, but that's the phone's charging hardware, not the connector. The details by model are in what charger the iPhone 16 needs and its sibling pages.
04Keep, adapt or replace your Lightning gear
USB-C to Lightning cable
- Fast-charges iPhone 8 through 14 from a USB-C PD charger
- Works with the same chargers as your new phone
- Keep one in the car if a family member is on Lightning
USB-C to USB-C cable
- Charges your phone, iPad, Mac and most Android gear
- 60W covers phones; 100W or 240W also covers laptops
- Pick USB 3 rated if you move big video files
Lightning adapter
- Lets a Lightning cable or dock plug into a USB-C phone
- Cheaper than replacing a dock
- Adds bulk; not worth it for plain cables
If your car's USB port is the old rectangular USB-A kind, a USB-A to USB-C cable handles CarPlay fine. It won't fast-charge, though. For more on that, see CarPlay not working with a cable.
05Cables worth buying after the switch
We'd buy a 60W or 100W USB-C to USB-C cable for each place you charge, plus one USB-C to Lightning cable while older gear is still around. Skip USB-A cables unless your car or an old computer needs them.
USB-C cables for iPhone 15 and later, plus a USB-C to Lightning cable for the gear you're keeping.

Questions people ask
Is USB-C faster than Lightning for charging an iPhone?
Not by much. Both fast-charge from a USB-C Power Delivery charger. Lightning iPhones peak around 20W; newer USB-C iPhones can take more from a bigger charger, but that comes from the phone's charging hardware, not the plug itself.
Can I use a Lightning cable on an iPhone 15 or later?
Not directly. The port is USB-C. Apple and others sell a USB-C to Lightning adapter that lets an existing Lightning cable or dock connect, but for everyday charging a USB-C cable is simpler and cheaper.
Which iPhones have USB 3 speeds?
The Pro models from iPhone 15 Pro onward, including iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro, support up to 10 Gb/s with a USB 3 cable. iPhone 15, 16, 16e, 17 and iPhone Air stay at USB 2 speed, the same as Lightning.
Will my old iPhone charger work with USB-C?
If it's a USB-C power adapter, yes, with a USB-C to USB-C cable. An old USB-A cube works with a USB-A to USB-C cable, but it charges slowly because USB-A doesn't support USB Power Delivery.
Why did Apple switch from Lightning to USB-C?
The EU's common-charger law requires USB-C on new phones sold there, applying from late 2024. Apple moved the iPhone 15 to USB-C in 2023 ahead of that deadline and has used it on every new iPhone since.
