iPhone Charging On Hold? Why it happens and what to do

It's a temperature alert, not a broken battery or a bad cable. Cool the phone down (or warm it up) and charging picks up again on its own.

01What iPhone Charging On Hold actually means

iPhone Charging On Hold means the battery is too warm (or, less often, too cold) to charge safely, so iOS has paused charging to protect it. It isn't a fault with your charger or your phone, and charging restarts automatically once the temperature is back to normal.

Apple's alert reads, in effect, "Charging will resume when iPhone returns to normal temperature." You'll see it on the Lock Screen and in Settings > Battery on iOS 16 and later. Lithium-ion batteries wear faster when they're pushed with current while hot, so the phone simply stops accepting a charge until it cools off. Apple says iPhone works best at ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C).

Several other iOS features also stop or slow charging, and they're easy to confuse. This table sorts them out:

What you see What's going on What to do
"Charging On Hold" alert Battery is outside its safe temperature range Cool it down or warm it up; it resumes by itself
Stops at the same % every time (80, 85, 90…) Charge Limit is set (iPhone 15 and later) Settings > Battery > Charging
Sits at 80% overnight, then hits 100% by morning Optimized Battery Charging learned your routine Normal. Turn it off if you need a full charge now
Pauses at random levels while plugged in Heat, or Clean Energy Charging (US only) waiting for a cleaner grid Check Battery settings for which one is active
Full-screen "iPhone needs to cool down" warning Phone is far too hot to use at all Turn it off, move it somewhere cool, wait
Charging On Hold is the only one of these caused purely by temperature, and it can't be switched off.

02Get it charging again in 15 minutes

  1. Move it out of the heat

Take the phone off the car dashboard, windowsill or sunny desk. Shade matters more than you'd think: a phone in direct sun can climb well past room temperature in minutes, even with the air on.

  2. Lock the screen and stop heavy apps

Gaming, video calls, 4K recording, navigation and Personal Hotspot all heat the chip and battery. Close them and press the side button. A phone that's working hard while it charges is the classic way to trigger the pause.

  3. Take the case off

Rugged, leather wallet and battery cases act like a jacket. Pull it off while the phone recovers. If you charge wirelessly every night, a thinner case is worth considering.

  4. Swap the wireless pad for a cable

Wireless charging wastes some energy as heat in both coils. If the alert keeps appearing on a pad, charge by cable for a while. Our iPhone wireless charging fixes cover pad-specific problems.

  5. Give it 10 to 15 minutes

Leave it plugged in. You don't need to unplug and replug; iOS restarts charging on its own once the battery is back in range.

  6. Restart if the alert won't clear

If the phone feels cool to the touch and the alert still sits there after 20 minutes, restart it (side button + volume button, slide to power off). That clears a stuck reading.

Don't put it in the fridge

Fast cooling in a fridge or freezer can cause condensation inside the phone. Room temperature and a bit of airflow is all it needs. Same goes for cold weather: never warm a phone with a hair dryer or heater.

03Why your iPhone gets too hot to charge

Charging itself makes heat. Add a second heat source and you're over the line. These are the repeat offenders:

  • Car mounts in summer. Windshield and dash mounts put the phone in full sun while it runs maps and charges. Vent mounts help if the AC is on. More in phone overheating in a car mount.
  • Charging under a pillow or on a duvet. Soft bedding stops heat escaping, especially on a wireless pad.
  • Using it hard while plugged in. A game on a fast charger is two big heat loads at once.
  • A thick case on a wireless pad. Extra distance makes the coils less efficient, and that lost energy turns into heat.
  • A cheap, uncertified charger. Poorly regulated adapters and pads run hotter. See how to spot a fake charger.
Cases that don't trap heat

Thin, vented shells that let warmth off the back glass. They won't cool a phone left in the sun, but they stop the case from being part of the problem.

04Charging On Hold in cold weather

The same alert shows up when the phone is too cold, which catches people out on ski trips, early winter commutes and in cars left outside overnight. Lithium batteries don't take a charge well when they're near freezing, so iOS waits.

The fix is patience. Bring the phone indoors or keep it in an inside pocket for 20 to 30 minutes before plugging it in. If you need power on a cold day out, charge from a power bank kept in a warm pocket rather than from a car charger in a freezing car.

05Is it Charging On Hold or the 80% limit?

If charging stops at exactly the same number every time, temperature isn't the cause. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging and look at the Charge Limit. You can set it anywhere from 80% to 100% in 5% steps, and it will stop there every single time. On iPhone 14 and earlier, the setting to check is Optimized Battery Charging under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging, which holds at 80% and finishes before you usually unplug.

Heat behaves differently. It can pause charging at 37% or at 91%, wherever the battery happens to be when it gets too warm. Apple also notes that a warm battery may be limited above 80% until it cools, which is why a hot phone often looks like it's stuck at 80. Our guide to why an iPhone stops charging at 80% covers the settings side in detail.

Cooler charging habits

When should you worry? If the alert appears at normal room temperature with the phone idle, if the phone feels hot without doing anything, or if the screen or back glass starts to lift, stop charging and book a check with Apple or an authorized repair shop. A swollen battery is a safety issue, not a setting. You can also look at your battery health to see whether the battery is worn.

Questions people ask

How do I turn off Charging On Hold on my iPhone?

You can't, and you wouldn't want to. It's a safety feature that stops the battery charging while it's too hot or too cold. The only way to clear it is to bring the phone back to a normal temperature, after which charging resumes on its own.

How long does Charging On Hold last?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes once you move the phone somewhere cooler and lock the screen. If it's sitting in direct sun or running a game, it can last as long as the heat does. A cold phone typically needs 20 to 30 minutes indoors.

Is Charging On Hold bad for my battery?

No. The pause is what protects the battery. Charging a lithium-ion battery while it's hot is what speeds up wear, so the alert is the phone doing its job. Seeing it often is a sign to change where or how you charge.

Why does my iPhone say Charging On Hold when it isn't hot?

The battery can be warmer than the outside of the phone feels, especially in a thick case or right after heavy use. It also appears when the phone is too cold. If it shows up at room temperature with the phone idle, restart it, and if it keeps happening, get the battery checked.

Does wireless charging cause Charging On Hold more often?

It can. Wireless charging is less efficient than a cable, and the lost energy becomes heat right against the battery. A thick case, poor alignment or a soft surface makes it worse. If you see the alert often on a pad, charge by cable for a while.
