CD slot phone mount: is it right for your car?

If your car has a CD slot you never use, it's a solid, adhesive-free anchor. The catch is what sits just above it.

01How a CD slot phone mount works

A CD slot phone mount slides a flat blade into the disc slot, then tightens so it can't wiggle out. The phone holder sits on a short arm in front of it. Because the slot is a solid part of the center stack, it's one of the steadiest places to hang a phone.

Most use either a thumb screw that spreads the blade inside the slot or a rubber-coated tab that grips by friction. The holder on the front can be a clamp or a magnetic head. With a magnetic head, the phone needs magnets of its own (iPhone 12 and later, ideally in a MagSafe-compatible case) or a metal plate.

+Why it works well

  • Very stable, no droop like a vent clip
  • No suction cups or adhesive on the dash
  • Doesn't block any air vents
  • Keeps the phone near the center screen

–What to watch

  • Can hide part of the infotainment screen
  • May cover buttons or knobs above the slot
  • You lose the CD player while it's fitted
  • Only works if your car still has a slot

02Does your car still have one?

Carmakers dropped built-in CD players from most new models over the past decade or so, replacing them with USB ports, Bluetooth and phone mirroring. If your car has a slot, it's probably a few years old, and you've likely stopped using it. That makes it free real estate.

Look at where the slot is. A slot sitting directly under the screen is the tricky layout: the phone may end up in front of it. A slot lower down the stack, with some space between it and the screen, usually works well. A slot in the glovebox or trunk-mounted changer is no use at all.

Hidden slots

Some cars hide the CD slot behind a flip-down screen or a motorized panel. A mount there will stop the panel moving, so pick a different style.

03Will it block your screen or controls?

Sit in the driver's seat and check

Hold your phone where the mount would put it and run through the list before you buy. Landscape mode is often better here: a sideways phone covers less height, so it's less likely to hide the screen above.

04Fitting it without a rattle

  1. Check there's no disc inside

Press eject first. A blade pushed against a disc can scratch it or damage the loading mechanism.

  2. Slide the blade in straight

Insert it level, only as far as it goes comfortably. Don't force it.

  3. Tighten until it stops moving

Turn the screw or lever until the mount doesn't shift when you push the head. Firm is enough; overtightening can stress the slot.

  4. Set the angle, then lock the ball joint

Angle the head toward the driver and tighten the ball joint so the phone doesn't sag over bumps.

  5. Add the phone and test

Drive a short loop with a few turns. If it rattles, tighten a little more or rotate the phone to landscape.

Don't use the player with it fitted

Inserting a disc while the blade is in the slot can jam the drive. Take the mount out first if you ever want to play a CD.

05Magnetic head or clamp head?

CD slot mounts come with either a magnetic pad or spring arms on the front. The slot part works the same; the head decides how you dock the phone.

  • Magnetic head: the fastest option. You snap the phone on with one hand, and the small head hides less of the dash. It needs an iPhone 12 or later, ideally in a MagSafe-compatible case, or a metal plate on other phones.
  • Clamp head: works with any phone and any case thickness, but the cradle is bulkier, which matters when the screen sits just above the slot.
  • Heavy phone, thick case: lean toward a clamp. A big phone on a magnet sitting out on an arm puts more twist on the blade in the slot.

If you go magnetic with a plate, use a ring-shaped plate centered on the charging coil, so wireless charging and tap-to-pay keep working. Our explainer on whether magnetic mounts damage phones covers placement and the camera.

06CD slot or something else?

If your car… Try Why
Has a slot well below the screen CD slot mount Steady, central, no adhesive
Has the slot right under the screen Dashboard mount Keeps the screen clear
Has sturdy horizontal vents Vent mount Cheap, small, easy to move
Has no slot and a textured dash Cup holder mount Twists tight, no suction needed

Questions people ask

Do CD slot phone mounts damage the CD player?

Not when fitted properly. Make sure no disc is inside, insert the blade straight and don't overtighten it. The main risk is inserting a disc while the mount is in place, which can jam the drive.

Are CD slot phone mounts stable?

They're among the steadiest car mounts because they anchor into a rigid part of the dash. A short arm and a tightened ball joint stop the phone bouncing on rough roads.

What if my car doesn't have a CD slot?

Use a dashboard, vent or cup holder mount instead. A dash mount suits most cars; a cup holder mount is a good fit for low or textured dashboards.

Do magnetic CD slot mounts work with any phone?

They need magnets to grab. iPhone 12 and later work best in a MagSafe-compatible case. Other phones need a metal plate on the back or inside the case.
