The nightstand charging station, done right

At night you're not in a hurry. That changes what makes a good charger: angle, light and heat matter more than speed.

01What matters at the bedside (and what doesn't)

A nightstand charging station has eight hours to work, so charging speed barely matters. What you'll notice is whether you can see the time, whether a light keeps you awake, and whether the phone is still on the charger in the morning.

Overnight, a phone on a 7.5W pad and one on a 25W magnetic charger both wake up full. Slower charging also makes a little less heat, and heat is what wears batteries over time. So spend on the things that change your nights:

  • Angle. An upright or tilted stand shows the screen from the pillow. Flat pads don't.
  • Grip. Magnets stop a buzzing phone from walking off-center at 3 a.m. A flat pad can lose contact and you wake to 30%.
  • Light. Some chargers have a status LED that stays on all night. Check for a dimmable or auto-off light.
  • Reach. You'll grab the phone half-asleep. One-handed lift-off beats a cable you have to find in the dark.

Wired charging still has a place here. If your phone has no magnets, you use a thick rugged case, or you only charge every other night and want it fast, a 20W to 30W USB-C charger and a cable is cheaper and quicker. Pick a cable long enough to reach the pillow (about 2 m) so you can still scroll in bed without unplugging.

02Turn your iPhone into a bedside clock with StandBy

StandBy, added in iOS 17, shows a full-screen clock, widgets or photos whenever your iPhone is charging, locked and lying on its side. It's the main reason to choose a stand that holds the phone in landscape.

  1. Switch it on

Open Settings > StandBy and turn StandBy on. It's on by default on most iPhones running iOS 17 or later.

  2. Turn on Night Mode

In the same menu, turn on Night Mode. In a dark room the display switches to a dim red tint that's much easier on your eyes.

  3. Set the phone sideways on the charger

Lock the iPhone and rest it in landscape on a stand or magnetic charger. It needs to be charging and still. A rotating magnetic stand makes this a one-second job.

  4. Pick your view

Swipe left or right to switch between widgets, photos and clock. Swipe up or down on the clock to change its style.

  5. Decide if you want it on all night

On iPhones with an always-on display, StandBy can stay visible. On others, the screen goes dark after a short while and wakes when you tap it. If any glow keeps you up, switch StandBy off in the same settings menu.

On Android?

Many Galaxy and Pixel phones have a clock or screen saver that appears while charging. Look in your phone's Display settings. An upright stand still helps because you can read notifications without lifting the phone.

03Three ways to set up a nightstand

Single magnetic stand

Best for phone-only nights
  • Small footprint on a crowded nightstand
  • Works in landscape for StandBy
  • Needs a phone or case with magnets
Our pick

3-in-1 stand with night light

Best for phone, watch and earbuds
  • One cable, one adapter for everything
  • Built-in light replaces a lamp for late trips
  • Check the watch charger matches your watch

Alarm clock with charging pad

Best for keeping the phone face-down
  • Time stays visible without the phone screen
  • Good if you're cutting back on bedtime scrolling
  • Flat pad, so alignment matters

04Is overnight charging bad for the battery?

Not with a modern phone. iPhones, Pixels and Galaxys all manage charging near the top and can hold below 100% until close to when you usually wake up. On iPhone, that's Optimized Battery Charging, and on iPhone 15 and later you can also set a Charge Limit under Settings > Battery > Charging.

If your phone sits at 80% every morning, that's usually one of those features doing its job, not a fault. Our iPhone stops charging at 80% guide explains the settings. What actually hurts a battery is heat, so:

Keep the nightstand cool

If the phone is hot to the touch after a night on the charger, see phone overheating while charging.

05Small details that make it better

  1. Use the adapter the stand asks for. A 3-in-1 stand on an old 5W cube may charge the phone but leave the watch flat.
  2. Run the cable down the back leg of the nightstand so it doesn't drape across the floor.
  3. Turn on Silent or a Focus at night. Fewer vibrations means the phone stays aligned on a flat pad.
  4. Keep a spare USB-C cable in the drawer for guests, rather than lending your stand.
  5. Check MagSafe-compatible cases if you use a magnetic stand. A case without magnets may slip, especially when the phone is sideways.

If your magnetic charger stops working, start with MagSafe charger not working. Planning a workspace too? The desk charging setup guide covers the daytime side.

Questions people ask

What is the best charger for a nightstand?

An upright or magnetic wireless stand on a 20W to 30W adapter suits most people. It shows the time, keeps the phone aligned, and charges fully overnight. Add a 3-in-1 model if you also charge a watch and earbuds.

How do I make my iPhone a bedside clock?

Use StandBy. Turn it on in Settings > StandBy, then lock your iPhone and set it on its side on a charger. Turn on Night Mode in the same menu for a dim red display in the dark.

Is it safe to charge a phone overnight on a wireless charger?

Yes, with a certified charger on a hard surface. Phones slow or hold charging when full. Keep the phone and charger out of bedding and direct sun, since heat is the main thing that wears batteries.

Why does StandBy turn off at night?

On iPhones without an always-on display, StandBy turns the screen off after a short time to save power. Tap the screen to see it again. Night Mode also dims it to red in low light.

Do I need a fast charger at the bedside?

No. Overnight, even a basic wireless pad fully charges a phone. A 20W to 30W adapter is plenty, and slower charging creates slightly less heat.
